You just need to spend more time playing in Smugmug and DON'T be afraid to play! There is plenty of help there.

Are you comfortable with doing a bit of CSS, Javascript and HTML, especially if someone basically tells you most of the code to use and you just modify it? I didn't know a lot about this stuff, but basically followed Smugmug's customization info and asked for help on Dgrin and was able to get the following result:

If you don't want to bother with advanced customization maybe start with the Easy Customizer (go to Control Panel -> Customize -> Easy Customizer) and see if you can dress things up a bit. Watch the video on this page:
