Has anyone heard of a problem with the auto-focus @ f8 on this camera?

Problem? No...

Not designed to do it? Yes...

Is there a software fix for this? It seems inconceivable to build such a solid camera and allow this to carry into production.

What makes you think it's a software limitation?

No fix since Canon designed it this way. There is talk they may reconsider, but just internet talk. In Canon's view, non-F8 AF isn't an issue.

it sounds like you are confusing a few things here. the camera can AF fine at all apertures so if you set your 70-200 to F8, the camera does in fact AF just fine. when people are complaining about no AF at F8 they mean that the camera will not allow lenses with an F8 aperture to AF. for example:

500 f4 set at f8- AF just fine.
500 F4+ 2x III extender (which makes it an F8 lens)- no AF.

this has ALWAYS been the case for all non 1 series cameras, the 1Dx is the first 1 series body that doesn't allow AF with an F8 lenses.

Why? Canon has been quite clear that the 1DX will not AF on F8 lenses since the announcement day.

They way I see Canon's reasoning behind this is that most people that are going to be buying this camera and using it on a regular basis will be using the tele's and not be stacking TC too often. Most people will probably be using the 300mm f2.8 or 400 f2.8 with this and when they need longer they can add a 2X TC easily and when that is not enough (or they are using the long end quite often) they can probably afford the super tele's .

Not, i am not saying that just because you are buying a 1DX means you can afford and will be using super teles exclusively, but this is what this camera is geared towards right?

The small bird shooters with a 500/4 or 600/4 and 2x are probably the most disappointed....perhaps BIF with a 400/5.6 and 1.4x too.
Hopefully the improved sensor performance can help mitigate the loss in potential FL.
