Howdy everyone . . . just subscribed. New to these forums. Love seeing the photos posted. I will post some when I figure out how. Tips? Also . . I have a new Canon 60D and want to buy a flash
attachment . . . opinions please. I'm not loaded ($$$) so what do you think of the knock-off brands?

Does anyone have the EF-D focusing screen in their 60d? Does it really help that much? Wouldn't the level option in live view do the same thing? It's not always that horizons are flat, I mean the earth is round after all, haha. I am thinking about picking it up for some landscape shooting in Alaska, but I'm not sure it would do much good. Plus I am terrible at delicate things like changing those out so once it's in when I'm on the trip I wouldn't be able to change it back if I hated it. Also, lastly, does it affect the metering mode, or is there a setting I can change when I install the screen? Thanks everybody, I'm still learning all this stuff, I wish I had started in photography as a kid, instead of an old guy!

Just about any software even DPP that came with your 60 will have a option to straiten the horizon.
The more you use your camera the more it will fit naturally in your hand, this will show in your results.

When DPP straightens a shot it ends up cutting off a lot of the edges as do other software. I am not looking to pick this up to help me, or correct anything for me. I am just wondering if it is really as useful as I have read everywhere.

jjj,

I switched to a EF-D focus screen not long after I got my 60D. I love it. The grid is very faint so it's not obnoxious. It doesn't affect the metering at all. I do find I'm more likely to get the horizons, etc level and buildings plumb. The built-in level doesn't seem to be practical for me, unless I'm setting up on a tripod: using it in the viewfinder seems cumbersome to me but to each their own.

You can use any high ISO on any any camera without concern, even ISO 6400 as shown in these actual ISO 6400 images from a Canon 60D.

All of these images from a 60D were taken with the camera set at ISO 6400, but there were no problems with noise. And there's an interesting reason.

Noise reduction software (external link) has been invented.

Do you remember reading all of those messages about the importance of post-processing? Well, this is some of that important post-processing. When you're done with an image, run it through the noise reduction software, Imagenomic's Noiseware (external link) in this case. The program works and takes care of high ISO noise. So, there's no more reason to worry. Just take pictures.

What version are you using for these pics? They look great and so crisp still. In fact, because of these, I downloaded the trial version.

Are you using the "default" noise reduction or do you tweak it? TIA

I'm a total skeptic and a pixel peeper to boot so I looked at the images and thought "yeah, that works for images that will be viewed on a computer but what about print sized images" (print sized = 11x14 and larger)

So, to test my skepticism, I also downloaded the trial version of said program and as the song says; "I'm a believer."

Below is a quick shot take just now with my 60D, a Tamron 28-300@84mm, f/11, 1/125th @6400ISO
This is a 100% crop and as you can see, the noise reduction is amazing. The photo was taken in low -tungsten- light, (1 200 watt bulb on the opposite wall). I had to play with the settings for less than 5 minutes to come up with these results. I'm sure that I could do even better with some experience with this program. Thank you DC Fan for bringing this program to my attention.

Does LR noise reduction not do the same thing?
