Canon 60D Users, Unite! (4!)

Custom White Balance is really by far the way to go.

I tried to achieve the same color using K(kelvin) but fail.

Here's my reference shot. See the gray card on top of my tripod head.

Vinz; how did you fill the frame with that small gray card? Shooting as shown in the setup wouldn't have produced an accurate WB (I don't think)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe when setting custom WB on the 60D it brings up a selector where you pick where on the frame "pure white" is and then it sets it based on that, that way you can use anything that is white to set the reference.

Those colors are spectacular... were they enhanced at all in post? It looks like the 70-200 f/4 gets the colors right.

I've not used custom WB since I got the 60D but assumed it was the same as my previous 5D. You choose an image as the reference but I don't see any method of selecting a spot in that image for WB.

And I just checked the manual to verify. It says (page 97) to fill the frame with the white/gray reference item.

So if Vinz shot the WB reference as shown in the set-up photo, it was coincidence rather than custom WB that gave him a good shot.

The only way to use a WB reference as shown, would be to correct WB in post using the card as a true white/gray.

Click on it in post and it should set it.

Thanks Kim On the Macaw and the Red Eclectus I actually desaturated the reds a little, with the Greet Eclectus I did not touch colors at all.

Very nice shots. The 100L is on my list after my photography budget builds back up.

Here's a shot with the old version of the 100USM. I found it used for $175 and thought I got a scraming deal on the USM version, but after taking it home and realizing what I had I thought the lady had pulled a fast on me. I just hadn't researched well enough to know about the older version, but after using it and knowing I paid about a quarter of the L price I'm happy. After realizing what I had and doing some research, I found that a lot of people compare this to the L series.

it works for me Hinson. I'm doing the same more than a year ago then i came across this video in youtube that advises to use K(Kelvin) and so I was doing the K since then.

Saw my grey card yesterday and thought of giving it a try one more time. Tried 3 times and the white balance is spot on.

I just shoot and focus on the grey card with the right exposure and use it as reference in the Custom White Balance found in the Menu.

I just use auto and correct in post as needed. Never really had an issue unless continuous lighting was used. Then, I can see needing custom. Portraiture, yeah, a good grey card should be included.

Agree. And when your WB is Accurate during shooting, the less time you need in the post. It won't take you hours to set the custom white balance. Pretty easy.
