Hey all,

What's a good subject-to-camera distance for portraits with our 60D's and an 85mm lens? My two nieces' first Communion is this weekend and I'll be taking the pictures. I'd like to try to get some nice portraits of the girls. I'm captivated by the lens archive for the Sigma 85/1.4, but at about 10-12 feet with my 50mm, I can barely get my 4 foot tall model (a floor standing fan, lol) to fit in the frame vertically. Going back to about 16 feet away with my 70-200 set at 85mm, I'd be chopping off about 6 inches, so I figure 85mm needs at least 20-25 feet away. Does that sound about right? Is there some kind of online calculator that could help me estimate distance?

That seems really far away to try to direct a child. I'm sure I'd be yelling to be heard from that far away, assuming we'll be outside. Anybody have any thoughts on how to deal with this?

The nifty works well, the 17-55 outside will be just as good. 20-30 ft for the 85 is about right...

The nifty in the church (actually, choir loft with relatively low light)

Your 70-200 outside would be great!

Question for you guys. I am buying this camera (its in the mail now) and I was wondering what is the best usable ISO when shooting raw? 3200? Also, what type of processing should I do with the image in Lightroom? Thanks.

Well, it will be worth your while to get used to ETTR and learn some noise handling programs.

I have to say that the noise handling in camera (producing a jpeg) is stellar if you ETTR.

I use RAW only when I shoot in low light, or demand a lot of PP.

Normally, I only shoot jpeg.

Please excuse my ignorance but ETTR means exposing to the right? What does that mean exactly? Also, I've been shooting RAW on my Xsi and then converting in Lightroom. Maybe I should just skip that step in the 60D and shoot JPG only except when I know I will need additional processing?

Whether you shoot RAW or not is up to you and how confident you are in your PostProcessing skills. I am comfortable with my pixel editor (GIMP, pretty much the Linux equivalent of Photoshop) while I find going through Darktable (the LR equivalent) to 'develop' the RAW a bit tedious. Of course, occasionally it pays off... YMMV.

ETTR means that you push your histogram (by overexposing) to the right until it just about blows the highlights. Then, by reducing the overexposure to normal (pulling back may be a stop to stop and a half, in RAW) the noise is substantially reduced.

Conversely, a well lit (slightly overexposed) jpg contains surprisingly little noise, which can be dealt with in post.

Whatever makes you more comfortable :D

EDIT: I mentioned histogram. You can get your histogram at photo preview (the light blue triangle at the bottom) when you press INFO twice (three times if you want to see the RGB histograms, the choice to view histograms stays until you press INFO again in photo preview)
