Great looking instrument panel in that Lincoln. Did you get any shots of the giant red Seagrave Speedster at that same show? I've been following the build of that car for a couple years on the Jalopy Journal site. The Caffeine & Octane show was it's debut.

I did actually! I'll post them.. 1000 cubic inches! That thing was crazy big

Here is the link Clay.. Enjoy

After using mostly my Sony NEX for the summer, I decided I love having the newer tech and features of a modern camera so tonight I traded my 5D classic for a 60D (you can't beat the Canon lens selection otherwise I would be 100% Sony mirrorless right now). Really looking forward to getting back into Canon again and buying some EF-S lenses such as the Sigma 17-50 OS and 10-20mm. Also I just LOVE the Canon 85mm 1.8 on crop!

Thanx Ron! I'd love to see and hear that monster in person some day. Hope you don't mind my sharing that link with the owner and his foillowers on the Jalopy Journal.

I was going to make a new thread but this might be a good place to ask.

I'm pretty set on picking up a 60D through the loyalty program

Would you guys recommend picking up just the body and then get a different lens (will be picking up the nifty fifty as well) or picking up the kit with the 18-135 lens? Learning how to properly shoot with that setup and then buying better glass as I go.

Trying to keep total initial budget ~1k

Shooting a variety of things (friends, surfing, nature, architecture, etc) I know for some of these I'll definitely need a bigger lens but to start out what would be ideal?

Do you have a good understanding of photography?
I hear the 18-135 is a good lens, it will certainly cover all of your proposed shooting situations other than surfing..

I say pick up a canon 50 f1.8 (nifty fifty) also.. Best bang for the buck!!

As was mentioned above, when you buy the 60D with the 18-135 kit lens, it is not the newer STM version of this lens. From all accounts, the new 18-135 STM is on par with the very fine 15-85 (my walk around/landscape lens) and it does give you more on the telephoto lens but a bit less on the wide angle side.

Bottom line? I would spend the extra money to get the STM lens. You won't regret it.
