My 60D is my workhorse. I love it.

Throwing a couple in the thread, keeping it alive. The 60D is my travel camera, lightweight, and inexpensive!

Folks, I'm new and some wacky things have been going on recently. Mainly, my kit lens (18-135 STM) can't focus at all regardless of the mode used (doesn't even focus manually - I mean, it does, but the photos come up blurry) and regardless of the lens, instead of flash popping up, there's this scary sound.

Otherwise, everything else works with a nifty fifty and a 70-200 L F4 USM.

Most people told me to replace batteries and have a repairman clean the camera. Is that what it could be?

Canon 60D and I ruin stuff, apparently.
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM (next week, until then a borrowed 1.8 II, killed mine)
EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (might be dead)

Clean the lens contacts, either with a pencil eraser, or with a q-tip soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Eraser works for most. If you cannot focus manually (with the AF switch on M) likely something is broken with the lens. Never heard anything like this with the flash. Can you post a video recording the noise?

I'm going to the store I trust to get a replacement battery this afternoon and if the problem persists, I'm going to do what you suggested. Either way, something is telling me that I won't be able to use that lens tomorrow for the show I'm shooting and that I might have to borrow the lamest kit lens from a friend. The L is useless in low light, probs. :(

And I just read what you said about manual - that doesn't work, either. Damn. :( And I definitely need some sort of a wide-angle to cover the lengths from 18 to 50. I mostly shoot concerts and club gigs, but on my bike rides I take pics of landscapes too, which is PITA with a prime or a tele.

It seems strange that a battery issue would only affect the operation of a single lens, but who knows. As far as cleaning the lens and body contacts I'd stick with the swab with a bit of isopropyl alcohol. I think the contacts are gold plated and a pencil eraser might prove too abrasive.

You could also try a reset of the camera to "as shipped" original settings. The procedure should be in the user manual, I suspect. Are the time and date set properly? Has your memory card been formatted in the camera? As far as the flash goes, do you regularly have anything mounted in the hotshoe?

If you're looking for a wider zoom lens you might check out the EFs 10-18mm F/4.5-5.6 IS STM.

A surprising lens for the price, especially if you can pick up a Canon Refurbished copy.

Please Guys, I need your help. A plastic piece of my 60d broke today. Not an important part though. It’s a tiny plastic that covers the battery.
