The PZD version is also smaller and lighter than than the earlier version.

The PZD version is a bit slower aperture-wise than the old version. But that seems to be the only drawback compared to the old non-PZD version.
I have the old version and I like it a lot. It's not perfect of course, no superzoom is, but for the purpose of walk-around, vacation, it is great.

Of the two I would get the newer and more expensive PZD. I would buy it soon, the $100 rebate is temporary and will probably not last much longer. Buy from some place reputable so you can replace it if you get a bad copy. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

enjoy your new lens i have the none PZD version of it and love the thing to bits. i have better glass in my bag but this thing just does a damn good job for most things just don't plan on shooting things with streight lines at 18mm

Actually the Canon 18-200mm is noticeably worse in this regard. And the CA at 18mm on the Canon is also very obvious, especially on a 100% crop. The control of CA on the new Tamron is pretty good at every focal length I've tried. Despite its IQ limitations the PZD is a terrific travel lens. Its also much smaller and lighter than the original version and balances well even on a Rebel.
