Not to throw fuel on an already raging fire, but a refurb 600D with the -20% code currently active comes out to around $640...just saying ;)

no fire....just a little candle

but alas....personal preference....I like the 7 over the 60. tried out both prior to making the purchase
just as I'm sure some people have tried both and came away with the 60

basic math is off....you said "lenses" implying plural
500 gets him halfway to one nice lens
additionally he stated he's found a 7D used at 1100 so he is willing to purchase used.
and in the end it's not even 500 that is the difference

As you said he's willing to purchase used, so a used 60D is going to be significanly less than $1100, they can be bought new in Aus for $800 at the moment, so I'm not sure what your argument is.

Let me show you the math

$1100 (used 7D) - $800 (new 60D) + $500 (ready to spend on a "portrait" lens) = $800
Can you see how that works? (yes come at me being pedantic and I'll come back at you being sarcastic :) ) If you spend LESS on one thing, you have MORE to spend on another.

For that money he could get, for example a Canon 50 1.4 and an 85 1.8. (lensES, plural, more than one) or a Canon 17-55 f2.8 (yes I know it's only one LENS).

It would seem though that you're just trolling, because you don't seem to have made any suggestions, or contributed anything to the discussion.

Guy wants a 7d...........geez.

Given that the OP has posted in the Canon EOS Digital Cameras Forum and has specifically asked for

DanFrank wrote in post #14612844 (external link)
Any help with picking the right glass would be great. And any suggestions on camera choice would be good also.

implies that he's open to suggestions about bodies as well.

Add to that the reasoning

DanFrank wrote in post #14613845 (external link)
I like the 7D really, becasue of the full metal body. I like the dual processor also. Something for holidays and parties, going to the park, some night time shots.

and the suggestion that the 7D is overkill for the type of images he is looking to capture stands.

exactly the point. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the OP may be buying based on reviews and comments made on forums rather than on having gone in store and trying out both bodies.

Get a 60d, then with the savings over the 7d, get lenses. You can get the 85mm for $400, get a cheap 50 for $100 because it is great to learn with and super cheap and I would get a walk around zoom as well.

No. Get the 7D.

Get the 7D you want and a 17-55 and a 70-200 and you should be all set for a little while.

I agree. Definitely get the 7D - I loved the feel of the metal body in my hands. I found myself growing out of my Rebel fairly quickly and wish I would have gotten the 7D sooner. I don't think you'll regret it. I'd suggest the 50mm f/1.4 or even the 35mm f/2 for a portrait lens ... or the 85mm f/1.8 like others have been suggesting. I think they're great lenses and they're not very expensive either if you buy used.

No. Get the 7D.

Because?

I have to say, maybe it is me, but on these forums owners of NO other bodies feel the need to justify their choice as much as 7d owners. This dude doesn't need a 7d. really, anyone not into sports and birding doesn't need a 7d. Here is some fuel for the fire, images from a 5dc, 5dii, and 5diii destroy those captured on a 7 d in capable hands, and non sports images/handling from a 60d and 7d are indistinguishable. So if sports and birds are your thing, by all means 7d is your no brainer answer, but if you shoot other things, strong arguments can be made for a 60d or 5d body.

Everything is relative.

I am going to buy my first dslr too. I am thinking of the new 650d. The pictures seem superb .I am only confused about the lenses. The reviews say 18- 135 has a soft focus. Will it work well as a good general walk around lens? Thanks in advance.

So in the end......for me, after having poured over reviews and read the forums about the 7D....60D and the D7000 over and over again......I went to Adorama.
What I though would take a long time deciding turned instead to be instant.
The Nikon just plain felt small ......the 60 felt like.......we'll a Rebel
The 7D felt like.........MINE. And so it became

But to the point of the quote.....besides his weak math skills :)
How a camera feels in one's hands is paramount especially in the face of technically close reviews.

As someone that upgraded from the T2i (550D) to the 7D not that long ago, I can throw my hat in the ring. In terms of the IQ and all that... the two are very similar. However, just go hold the 7D and that'll be the end of it. Less than a week after holding it, it was ordered. It seems somewhat silly, but if you enjoy the camera and enjoy holding it, you'll find yourself learning it (perhaps just because you're using it any chance you get). As much as it weighs (and it is kind of a pig) and as "complicated" as the layout may seem at first, it doesn't take too long to get into the groove of things. I'm not trying to push a camera I deemed worthy of my money onto you, just stating that if it's what you really want... you may not be happy until you get it. There are some fiercely opinionated people in the world.

Ready to invest a my first SLR camera. My long dream to start shooting can now become true. I've gone through quite a few Canon cameras in the last 10 years, so I'm familiar with the interface, although non were SLR's. I'm looking to shoot portraits, low light outdoor scenes (local bar's, restaurants, concerts,) my dogs, my baby, fireworks! all the good stuff. Not to much video. I'm looking to get the 7D (body only) and add a decent all around lens separate, or possibly two. (this is just to start- will add more glass later.(not sure which lens though)

Any help with picking the right glass would be great. And any suggestions on camera choice would be good also.

Thanks

7D is a GREAT camera and why not learn with one of the best available!
I kind of scanned the replies but didn't read many ... what little I got ... don't buy the 7D buy XXD because ... typical! 7D is an excellent choice of a body!

As for a lens ... Not THE best and far from the worse, I have two copies of the 28-135 IS. It was the first lens I bought with my 10D (my 1st dSLR) back in 2003. Still use it all the time and in fact got a 2nd one with the purchase of my 7D. The 28-135 has a great range, has IS and is a very good lens. Great for well lit outside shooting or using a flash. It is NOT a good low light lens at all but beware, those lenses will COST you!
Having said that, the 7D body and 28-135 IS lens will get you going and be usable long into the future. Once you learn to use the 7D, you'll figure out which lenses will be best for what you want to shoot.

My personal feeling ... I keep away from EF-S lenses ... why? (not saying there's anything wrong with them but ...) One big reason, all my bodies except the 7D will not accept them, but my 7D does accept EF lenses. Can't see spending money on a lens that will not fit on ALL my bodies ... something to think about if you ever plan on going to a FF body!

As for a better lens for low light ... 24-70 f2.8 L ... exceptional lens! and as you will notice ... very pricey but money well spent if you need a lens like that!

I want to thank everyone for there help in selecting my first DSLR. Today I was able to hold and play around with both the 60D and 7D. I liked the price of the 60D more than the 7D (obviously) lol, also liked the manual contols more. But that's were it ended. The 7D felt real in my hands. Heavy and solid. The 60D seemed way to light, not cheap, but kinda like a toy in a sense. I liked the fact that the LCD was build into the camera and not able to rotate/move. This was a huge issue for me. I found myself trying not to put my left thumb on the 60D, where it moves for some reason. Just felt very awkward. So I purchased a like new 7D with Canon EOS bag, and a Sandisk Ultra II card for $1000. Thanks again & now I'll head over to the lens area and figure out that part!

Congrats! I, too, would find myself going crazy over a rotating screen. I wouldn't want the 60D for that very reason ;)
