Dell just introduced it's iMac killer, the XPS One, with a 27" 2560x1440 Samsung PLS monitor. $1,399 for the base model with an i5 processor. Not bad when the monitor sells by itself for about $900.

Now I'm just trying to find the best deal. Adorama sells them at list price with no sales tax. However, they charge for shipping on the base $1,399 6GB RAM model for a net price of about $1,435. (Free shipping on the $1,599 8GB RAM model.) But, it looks like there is absolutely no chance of a refund, regardless of the reason for return.

Dell has offered me the $1,399 model for $25 off, a $50 gift card, $50 if I sign up for a Dell credit card (probably not worth it because Amex has other benefits) and $100 off the 3-year protection plan (which I probably wouldn't buy anyway). However, they charge California sales tax for a net price of about $1,325 ($1,440 including tax).

I'm ready to order but am wondering if anyone knows of a better deal or has any coupon codes for Dell. (I sent Helen an email asking if they can match Dell's return policy. If so, I'd much rather go through Adorama.)

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

Similar spec to the iMac, and since the monitor would be close to $1,000 by itself, the computer innards are only about $400, which is reasonable considering that it's got a $200 processor.

Last month I was considering dropping about a thousand dollars more and switching to Apple just to get the iMac's monitor. This computer has the same monitor and I don't have to buy new software.

I would say it's not a Windows killer if it runs Mac. At least not so far.

an iMac is a piece of hardware. Windows is an operating system.

That chart is comparing one hardware manufacture, against the rest (plus the macs running windows)

So basically, out of the hundreds of company that sell computers, 1 out of every 10 computers sold is from Apple? That's a pretty dominante computer manufacturer if you ask me.

I love those Apple displays but switching to an Apple OS would be an utter waste of time for me. Arguing about Apple vs. PC is like arguing about Chevy vs. Ford - the argument itself shows that the people involved can't step back far enough to recognize that they're almost identical machines.

Yep.

I make my living as a Microsoft .NET developer, so I have no ill will towards Microsoft as a company. I have never been one for brand loyalty, and if you ever met me in person, image would be the last thing anyone would think I cared about.

Computers are tools, and a Mac is simply the best tool for what I do. The reason is hardware, and the fact that I can run OSX and Windows on it at the same time. OSX is an awesome operating system. I like to think of it as Linux with a ton of polish. while I develop, I might have 3-4 virtual machines going at one time with different flavors if Windows in them, for testing purposes.

Having the host OS be a unix bases OS works far better for me, then having Windows as the base operating system.

I could buy some other hardware, and run Linux, but the hardware is what I want. nice display, quiet, and I never have any issues. The Mac's are also cheaper in the end.

I have a top of the line iMac I bought mid 2010. I don't currently have any plans on selling it, but if I did, it would go for around $1400. I paid $1900 for it new (Apple referb)

So the cost of ownership has been around $250 a year so far. Not bad at all.

I also love the fact that I buy it, pull it out of the box, plug it in, run software update once (not the dozen times I need to do it every time I install windows), and I am done. I used to build my own PC's, and the simplicity of this thing is very nice.

Agreed, I just hate how any computer thread has to be pounced upon by the Mac Missionaries.

The fact that you think they're anything close to identical shows me a lot. I used Windows machines for 15 years or so. Been using Macs (running OSX) for probably 5 or 6 years. There is no way in hell I would ever go back to a Windows machine

People can poo poo it all they want, but there is just something different about working on a Mac. I never find myself fighting against the computer because it won't do what I want or bemoaning the idiotic way in which you must go halfway around just to do one simple thing. The Mac just works, OSX uses common sense. Apple is a snowball rolling downhill. They will only continue to gather a larger and larger percentage of the computer market. They control the tablet market, a stranglehold, to be more exact. They are doing quite well with their phone. And the one area that most people thought they would never truly conquer, because of Microsoft, is an area that has seen years of steady growth.

For years, Microsoft didn't really care about the hardware so much. It was all about the software. Apple figured out that is has to be about both and how they integrate with one another.

It comes down to something very simple, in each case; culture. The Windows culture was one where people put up with the hardware in order to use the software.

It's not an accident that Apple is SO successful. It's not coincidence that they are the largest company in the world when you measure market capitalization. They just do it right. People don't have to like them, but they should at least respect what went into making them.

A perfect example of why I use Macs and why I love OSX. Are they a larger initial investment? Yes, but they will last you longer and cost more in the long run, considering you will buy two computers for the length of time you buy one Apple.

The simplicity is quite addictive. When you first learn OSX, you wonder why you hadn't given it a chance before. Everything relates to common sense and how you would figure it should be done in the first place. Instead of some convoluted workaround. The resale value is also another plus, if you should ever need to upgrade.

It can't be said enough; it just works and works simply. Not to mention, if you do need help, the customer service at the Apple store is second to none. They get you in and out very fast.

This is a photo forum. At least use the Nikon vs Canon analogy.
