I don't really see how someone can suggest a focal lenghth. Everyone has their own style. If your asking which is better they are very close.

Primes are hard to choose and in time you will probably realize you need a set of them. That is assuming you like to shoot with primes. A general rule is 24/50/100 or 35/85/135.

too true. I like the versatility of the 35mm focal length, but if you want versatility, you get a zoom. The 24 is more of a speciality lens, since you've got versatility covered. Street shooting = 24 or 28mm IMO. 50-85 = portraiture. Odd man out, the 35, can do a bit of everything in a pinch.

I agree with you. Everyone's approach to shooting is different. Some people do street photography using a 135L getting candids while others using a wide angle and get right into the scene. I kind of chuckle to myself when people try to persuade someone towards the way they like to shoot.

OP, you really need to decide what type of photography you like and get glass to fit that style.

24. The wider the better.

This is a public forum. One starts a thread to get subjective comments from other fellow members in order to make an informed decision. Final decision is always on the OP. I don't see any problem with that???

Also some people might not have figured out their own style yet and rather stick to the general rules?

I'd go with 24mm. I like wide angles. But if you bring the 17-40 then it'd almost make the 24mm unnecessary, unless you are going for handheld really low light shots.

I have 24,50,50,24-105

Would be tough choice for me too, but I'd rather take both.

On a 5D, the 24-105L should do just about anything you want. IS will let you get shots of interiors of cathedrals - don't miss St. Chapelle in Paris.
If you think that you may want a wider lens, then take the 17-40 as well.
When I was in Rome, I carried a Canon powershot in my pocket at night. I didn't want to drag my SLR around to dinner. If you want a fast prime for the 5D, you should already know the answer. For me, I'd want the 35f1.4 on full frame. I'd find the 24 a bit too wide for a prime, but not on a crop.
It is all a matter of personal preference here, and what you want to photograph.
You have gone through more lenses than most people even think about. You should really know what you would like by now.
I'd be sure to travel with a backup zoom, in case of an unexpected failure. If you take the 24-105, bring the 17-40 along as well. I don't get to Europe every year, and the unexpected always happens.

Well I'm used to mostly shooting portraits so I've dealt with lots and lots of longer focal length. But on the other hand, 35L and 24L are unknown territory for me, so I'm really cautious about them. The widest I've had was 17-40 and didn't get a chance to use it too much. I tend to think now to give 35L a shot since it's something that could be carried at night without bearing too much weight. Also, tampering with an idea of just getting a 40 pancake.

I'm now considering 24/50/100 with a FF and a crop body backup (any of the Txi's or a 50D are great for this IMO. That way you get 24/50/100 and 38/80/160 on the crop. Or for me with my two bodies I get 24/50/100 and 31/65/130 which I'm now considering to be almost perfect.

When I went to Spain earlier this year I took my 16-35, 24-105, and 35L with me that also worked out great

24/50/100 is a great combo especially if you have ASP-C and full frame but the setup you mention for spain seems ideal for travel just because I think I would want an UW option too but usually 24 is wide enough for me.

Too many good lenses to choose from

I shoot with 1.6x gear and the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and 70-200mm f/4L IS really cover all of my needs.

However, I don't really know of a full frame lens that has all the attributes of my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens.

I had expected that Canon would have introduced the 24-70mm f/2.8L ii with IS capability. That would have made a wonderful combination with the 70-200mm f/4L IS or 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS lenses.

The 24-105mm would probably be the lens I would choose for an all around glass if I were shooting full-frame. However, that lens only has an f/4 maximum aperture. I shoot with the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses on a pair of 1.6x cameras.

Yes, the increased ISO capaability of the 5Diii camera would make up for the lack of IS in the 24-105mm lens. However, you can achieve a more narrow DOF using the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens (on a 1.6x camera) at 55mm using f/2.8 than you can with a full frame camera and the 24-105mm f/4L IS at 55mm at f/4.

Sure, you can increase the focal length of the 24-105mm lens but, I have the 70-200mm lens to cover that focal lenght (minus of course the 55-70mm gap which I don't really miss).
