Teekay, lol.this was taken awhile ago, learning DOF on still life. The hair is just like that, no J'Lo fan needed! Thanks for the comments

this was the first challenge i entered! seems like a lot of fun! looking forward to the next one (teekay... sorry, but i have NO idea what species of bird that is .... I got a good laugh since i too couldn't decide if they were "cute" or just "ugly"...haha

Yes, these challenges are a lot of fun - but not the judging!

I'd really like to know what species those birds are, so would you mind if I copied and posted a cropped, reduced size version of your entry on my local birding forum to get an ID? Then I'd let you know here, of course.

I think those birds are Frog mouth owls?

Thanks for the words Teekay; i didn't even play with the composition or crop, as i wanted it to stay unattractive, and couldn't really see any comp that would make it "uglier". It was a quick one-off shot, maybe i should have stopped-down some.

hey, teekay... absolutely... your group of experts might just be able to identify them! they were in a hodge-podge exhibit at the Bronx Zoo ( HHHUUUUGGGE ). But that portion wasn't open to the public, and nothing was labeled. (At least as far as i could tell). They were in the madagascar section, so maybe from that area. But, i had a feeling they were just in that section temporarily.

Sorry to butt in but they look to me like "Tawny Frogmouths" native to Australia only, but are distributed to zoos worldwide. But i could be wrong

haha... you did say that, first, indeed, Flo !!! I think that's a separate challenge WIN! "identify things cute and ugly thing!" hahaha.... and the prize is... a Brand new EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM... cough, cough.... ummm... i'd better just just make the prize "KUDOS" since you won't have to wait an eternity for that kind of recognition

Actually, Flo, you were close but no banana! I conscientiously Googled after your posting and found out that frogmouths are not owls, so pressed on to consult gurus.
