Back to the same old problem .
Went to the drag races yesterday and not impressed with the pics
Some turned out, most didn't
I was shooting with the 100-400 and was at the 100mm setting
I was at the top of the grandstand so I couldn't get any further away
Camera was at 100 ISO, 1/80 sec on aperture priority
I want to go back this afternoon but not to take pics like this
What did I do wrong ?
Thanks in advance

Panning is a learned skill. Just keep at it. But you're handicapping yourself by shooting at 1/60 and 1/80 sec. Raise your ISO to the highest that you can without noise becoming objectionable. And open up the lens from F/7.1

If you have IS on your lens, unless you can apply it selectively to the vertical plane, turn it off. On many lenses it will fight you if you're panning.
