I got my camera on Thursday, and other than a few shots around the house that night and last night, today was the first outing with it. It now has 267 clicks on the shutter.

The outing was to a varsity high school volleyball tournament. At that level, the play is fast, and movement is not easily predictable like that of a runner. In my opinion, it is one of the hardest sports to shoot, and really tests the AF system. I've been shooting the sport for about five years with a 1D Mark III.

For this outing I shot ambient, 14 fps, manual exposure, Case 6 default settings, AI servo, manual point selection with expansion to the surrounding 8 points (slightly above center in portrait orientation), AI servo 1st image priority set to focus, and AI servo 2nd image priority set to equal, AWB under fluorescent lighting, and RAW. I usually shoot in bursts of 2 to 5 shots.

First sequence using the 135 F2L. Target player was #2, middle hitter. ISO 8000, f2.5, 1/1000. The images were imported into LR4, and the exposure was brought down 1/2 stop because they were overexposed. No other adjustments were made, and they were exported and converted to JPEG at the largest file setting. These are clicks 131 - 135 on the camera.

Second sequence using the 300 F4L. Target player was #2, outside hitter (different team). ISO 8000, f4.5, 1/640. These were shot in a different gym. The images were imported into LR4, no adjustments were made, and they were exported and converted to JPEG at the largest file setting. These are clicks 245 - 248 on the camera.

Both bursts are complete bursts. There is a lot going on to grab the focus in the second burst - net, opposing players, net wand, etc., but the camera stayed locked on the player. Overall, about 95% of my shots today were in focus. The ones that were oof had the whole sequence oof and were clearly due to my failures.

My first race-car panning shot. I think I nailed it. 100% crop also.

35L, ISO 400, f5.6, 1/160.

Visited the Milwaukee Zoo today and snapped quite a few. These were two that stood out.

Just minor adjustments in Camera Raw. Both shot with 1DX+300mm 2.8L IS MK2

1. Shot through a vertical mesh screen which prevented the birds from flying out.

2. 5000 ISO, shot through glass.

Sorry for so many pics, but I wanted to show a quick 10 shot burst, SOOC. Great colors, great focus.

It's handled the white balance really well; good stuff. Did you use a camera setting, auto or custom WB?

I'd like to see tighter crops, the surfer is underexposed, you really can't see his face with any detail and the over all color is not exciting me. The surfer has yellow shorts that are not vibrant because of the lighting and exposure. Also the surfers in the background are distracting and should be cropped out

If the sun was reversed hitting the front of the wave and surfer it would be cool, but the sun light is behind the subject and the "action" of the breaking wave. I suppose you call that back lighting but it's not working for me on this surfing sequence.

The sequence does not give any kudos for the focusing ability of the 1DX either.

The first shot or two it looks like the camera focused on the surfer than as the sequence progressed and the splash moved in front of the surfer the camera focused on the splash and the surfer and his face is OOF and blocked out by the splash.

The surfer is underexposed due to the lightning conditions - late afternoon and very low sun.

Regarding the crop - sorry, I like it the way it is (BTW - so are the surfers).

Regarding the focus - In this sequence it remain on the surfer.
