One shot AF also seems to front focus at some distances, but not as badly as in AI Servo.

Have you tried various AF cases? I assume so and I cannot think of anything that would cause this. Tried other lenses? hope canon gets it sorted for you.

Have you tried setting the camera on Zone AF and letting it use auto face detection to see if it makes any difference with tracking? Just curious.

By all accounts I have seen, the new firmware works great. No problems. So I finally upgraded mine yesterday. Love the new features.

What are the "new features"; can you list them?

The good thing about having a camera with you when you are out and about is that you can capture those special moments when they occur to help keep the memory alive for ever.

I snapped this pic of my daughter today whilst we were out wake boarding, and although Danica has been riding a wakeboard for quite a few years now, she had never tried a wake skate before. Getting up on these things is like trying to stand on ice with grease covered feet.

Danica was up and riding after just a couple of attempts and my camera captured her joy in doing so!

The other good thing about having a camera on hand is that I can also capture moments like this one too.

She looks more like an Olympic sprinter jumping out of the blocks rather than someone about to stack it on a wake skate.

And to be fair, I had better post a pic of her in contra; of her wakeboard too.

That's bad news Jack. I can't follow how the camera can be front focusing though? I read what you said about Canon saying the adjustment was in excess of what M.A. could do, which tends to suggest that they've taken the lens element out and re aligned it. That was once done to my 400mm 5.6 which had a similar problem. Except in this case they haven't as the problem is clearly still there.
Assuming Canon were correct in their assessment then I would expect the adjusted lens to have come back precisely adjusted to your 1Dx, i.e. needing 0 M.A. at either end. That is perfectly possible, I have both and my 70-200mm is absolutely sharp at wide and long ends on my 1Dx.
The obvious question which occurs to me is, are other lenses you fit to your 1Dx exhibiting exactly the same problem? If so then the camera is off, if not then it must be your 70-200mm which needs recalibrating (and clearly hasn't been). A phone call to Canon on Monday I reckon.

Yep. They told me on the phone both camera and lens had been adjusted and calibrated together so would need no MA.

Not tried other lenses but later I will try my 70-200 mk1 which I haven't sold yet. It would be interesting to see what it's like but regardless, the camera and 70-200 mk2 should now be working perfectly together!

I've only really tried case 1 (which should be ideal for the simple task of tracking someone walking at a constant speed towards the camera), but within that I've tried various settings for acceleration/deceleration. They don't make any difference.

Also, I may be wrong, but as all the options are set to prioritse focus over frame rate, shouldn't the camera not even be taking photos that are that out of focus? Shouldn't it just slow down the frame rate until focus is achieved for each shot? Even more so with the new firmware.

Not tried this, but I will do just out of interest. If that does work though, there still must be a problem for the normal focus point tracking not to work...

I'm really annoyed about this... I've spent a lot of money on the best body Canon make and one of their best lenses, got Canon to calibrate them, and yet still can't get a single sharp shot of someone walking...

I had a similar problem with my setup. I sent the pair into Irvine and they fixed some electronic issue in the lens and the pair are now perfect together...

Hope you get this resolved.

That's interesting, thanks for letting me know. What were the symptoms with your problem? Was it just AI servo?

Looking back through all my photos I see that there are some burst sequences that have mostly sharp shots, but these are by far in the minority...

The AF mode didn't matter. And, once I got the lens fixed, it was obvious that I was experiencing the problem with it on my 5D2 as well...

At one point during the day the IS on the lens starting sounding much louder when it started and stopped. I turned the camera off and on again and the sound went back to the normal volume.

Not sure if it could be related - was your issue anything to do with the IS??

Thanks

I'm not quite sure. It's possible it was IS related although the lens never made any odd noises.

Canon is typically fairly cryptic on their repair notes. I was actually pretty impressed that they cited an electrical problem in the lens versus their usual "fixed...works" comments.

;)
