^ Awesome. I hope to get a chance to capture some of the crossovers at Miramar this year. (though Miramar lighting is typically ugly).

Thanks! Actually I'm surprised I got any decent shots at El Centro. It was horribly dusty and winds were 20-25 knots with up to 35 knot gusts! The heat haze made it worse! Anything below 500 ft was jello!

Haha. I think you confused me with another aviation photog. :) I haven't had the opportunity to get out to El Centro yet... :(

Whilst on the subject of DoF, this was taken with my 1Dx + 85mm @ f/1.2:

Thanks. I positioned myself so that when I focused on the lhs of the reg plate, the distance coincided with the distance to the cetntre of the o/s/r wheel, hence I got both in focus when I built up the shot (Brenizer method). The 85mm f/1.2 is ideal for this.

yipDog, I have to say, spectactular flight images as always!

I have to ask, how you pan and get sharpness like that at 1/125 sec. (I know you do it for a living, and probably have thousands of hours shooting aircraft), but just wondering besides that, any tips for aircraft shots? I was at that show the same day, and was shooting a 7d and a 5d3 with a 400 f4 DO +1.4 TC and had trouble getting sharp shots at 1/800 - 1/1250 sec. Very frustrating.

Thanks rrblint. I got a 2 or 3 shots that were decent out of 200 or so, but nothing close to yipDog's fantastic images, if you look at a crop, and with almost 10 times the shutter speed.

The issue is you have to use a slower shutter speed to get prop blur, and at my current shutter speeds I cant show much prop blur if any. Just wondering besides practice, if there's something I may be missing.

Yes, he'd be the right one to answer those questions, he's great at it.

Hey guys!
Thanks for the compliments! As for what's happening, first off I don't see an issue with the F-16 shot knowing what was going on that day. That jet is moving close to 500mph. The shot of mine you are mentioning, the plane is maybe around 130-150mph. That plus the distance from the crowd line to the plane being significantly different introduces atmosphere. It was pretty warm that day and the heat haze rendered many of my shots of the F-16's fuzzy. Had even worse luck at El Centro the day before where the crowd line was back another several hundred feet and the 25mph wind was kicking up dust to add to the heat haze.

As for other factors, I don't know much about the 400 DO and how it responds with the TC. The 500 mk2 loses virtually nothing IQ-wise with the 1.4 and is as sharp as a lens can get. With the accuracy of the 1Dx's AF system it's about as good as it gets. The 5D mk3's AF software is the same but it doesn't have the dedicated processor for AF like the 1Dx. I have a 5D mk3 and notice the difference when shooting aviation. Once again, your shot doesn't look OOF, looks more like the heat haze issue.

Lastly, I do a couple of things in post that help make a good capture pop. All I can say is it takes LR5 and PS CC and NIK plugins to process the way I do.

I get a lot of practice shooting but know I can improve on my technique too. My "sensei" blows me away when I see shots we did side by side. His handholding technique is as good as I've ever seen. He still won't tell me how many keepers he gets or his post process and that's just part of keeping our shots from looking identical. Constantly honing in on our own styles.

Once again, the F-16 shot with the conditions and distances we were shooting at I don't see anything wrong. Have some more to share?
