I just rented this lens to try some stars/milky way shots this weekend. I figured the 1.4 would help quite a bit to bring down needed ISO.

attached are 2 screenshots of an image I took with it at 1.4 on my 5d-2, 2000iso, 8 seconds.

dont pay attention to the noise level, I brightened them a lot to show the blurred corner areas.

the image on the left is the center part of the sensor. The right image is the corner part of the sensor.

Noticed the stars in the corner area of the sensor are blurred like Im shooting through water. Is this normal for this lens? This pretty much makes it worthless in my opinion atleast for star shots.

1.4 isn't going to be the optimum opening, that's for sure.

Yes - I had one then traded for the 24 TS-E - these are with the 1.4 II - what you are seeing is called Coma in the corners - looks like little triangles - stop it down and it gets better though

Well that sucks. Stopping down kind of defeats the whole purpose for stars anyway. They do look like little Saturns though. haha

I would say stopping down 1/3 to 2/3 stops should yield a fair jump in IQ
