2mm more is a big deal.... Canon brand = better resale.

Id buy a 17-40 too, and just use the same hood. Excellent excuse to buy another lens =)

Not arguing its a great lens; I wouldnt have forked out if I thought it was going to be otherwise but from the customer relations point of view I would have thought a hood (which must cost a couple of dollars to manufacture) would be a nice thing to fall out of the box.:)

I did some looking into Nikkor glass a while back, check out how many of those lenses come with hoods? At least Canon f2.8 glass comes with a hood, most Nikons don't.

Who cares if it comes with or without the hood. Don't worry I'm sure Canon will add the hood and jack the price according down the road if demand so needs it. You don't think L hoods come in the box for free do you? Trust me L's would be that much cheaper sans hood and case, my 70-200L has a darn nice case, I'm sure the price for that lens would be down $75 sans case and hood if available.

Only the 3rd parties throw in the hood 100% of the time, and they sorta have too. One of their major selling points is price. In most cases they don't surpass OEM lenses in all manners so they need a competitive value adder like hoods and lower price to attract you. Else why would you look at them given their known quality and future upgrade short falls. I'm sure exception occur but the above holds true in most cases.

I kaNt sPeL...

I like this almost as much as my idea to get a 5D so I don't have to find something wider than my 15-30 Sigma, thus saving about $500-$700.
