I just finished reading a ton of info on here and lenrental and I believe it is the shutter. Yesterday, was at a picnic and started taking pics. Went to take a pic and got error 99 telling me to turn camera off and on and to take battery out and put back in. Did this and camera was working fine for rest of pics. (about 10). Got up this am and when I turned the camera on, bingo - error 99. If the battery is in the camera and I turn it on I get the error immediately also hear the shutter activate. If I push the shutter button - nothing. Also if I open or close either the battery door or CF card door, shutter activates. Looking in front of camera I see the mirror is up all the time. Have searched and read a ton of info on here and a article on lensrental about error 99 and have tried the following:

Cleaning contacts on lens and body.
Three different lens
Three batteries - original Canon that came with camera when I bought it used last year and also two Sterlingtek I bought last month
Pulled both batteries and let sit for an hour

Haven't tried new coin batter yet as I need to run and get one.

Right now I have both batteries out and letting it sit with power switch on as recommended by lensrental article.

Looks like its going to have to go in for service as due to being retired and just getting over some medical bills I can't upgrade - Would love a 7D or 5D MkII :)

Sorry for the long post but was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions or if you think this sounds like the shutter. 10K shutter count now.

It appears that error is related to the shutter as you mentioned. The few blurbs I've found searching the internet mostly points to that.

I sent my 40D to Canon Irvine for cleaning and calibration to my 17-55 almost a year ago and the price was just over $300.00. It looks like used 40Ds are going for about $400.00. If you are happy with the 40D then I think spending the money on it is a good deal. If you were thinking of a new camera anyway, this may be the time. Check out the Canon Customer Loyalty Program (external link) for a deal on reconditioned bodies.

I had this error on my 40D a couple of years ago. Don't bother getting a new coin battery as the shutter needs replacing by Canon. I had the camera back in a week.

It cost me £105 (about $160) if I remember correctly. My 40D has been fine since, but I don't use it as much now I have a 7D.

My 40D failed in the manner you described. I also tried the common remedies, to no avail. I sent it to Canon in Newport News last month. The shutter was replaced at a cost of $241 (including tax and 2-day shipping to Texas).

I was not happy about the expense, but the camera has yielded beautiful pictures. For reference, the shutter logged 31K actuations before failing.

had the same error on my XTi....everything led to the shutter. as i was gonna be purchasing a new one, i chanced it and removed the casing to see if a ribbon cable had come loose. nothing seemed out of place and nothing was corroded, so i put it back together. haven't had the error since.

all my symptoms were exactly the same and it is related to the shutter failing.
