I agree the 100-400L could really benefit from an upgrade, but the rumors have been out there way too long for me to get excited. If Canon finally does announce something, I will be very interested in upgrading if the price is not outrageous.

Until then, I will happily continue using the existing 100-400L. It's probably my 2nd most used lens, and it takes much better photos than a rumor. ;)

I had a less-than-great copy, Or a copy that needed some tweaking, That coupled with the physical length issues lead me to sell it off late last year and get a 70-200 f/4L IS, The 70-200 f/4L IS + 1.4x tcon produces much sharper images, Albeit its not as long as my 100-400 and i really miss that extra 120mm sometimes...

I just saw this on Canon Rumors and it sounds splendid. I really want to see a updated version of the 100-400L. They say it will be better than the 400 f/5.6L prime because of the new optics. I was thinking maybe not to buy the 400 f/5.6L prime next week but the new 100-400L might come out in 1, 2 years so I rather not wait. Besides, it will go for 2,5K at least so it's a lot of money, the 400mm used is 1000$.
This means the current version of the 100-400L will drop in price when the MK2 will be released but will it be worth it?

Anyways, hope to see some prototypes of it soon!

I'll believe this when I see it and not a second before. Canonrumors has a proud history of fabricating utter nonsense and until Canon announce something official that's all that this article is.

People said the 40mm f/2.8 was utter nonsense ;)

I own the 70-200mm f/4 IS, too, and agree that it is a better lens in every way... except one very important way -- reach. Luckily, I have a very good copy of the 100-400L, so I do not sacrifice much when I need more focal length. When the added reach is not needed, though, I love using the 70-200 f/4 IS.

Different tools for different tasks.

On the plus side, if it's been rumored for 5+ years.. the probability of it happening get's better and better all the time.

On the negative side, people thought the introduction of the 70-300L was intended as a weak replacement/alternative. Also, with the uber-expensive 200-400 coming out (some year), i can't see Canon wanting a revised 100-400 cannibalizing it's sales.

Yep, pretty much, Eventually i will address my reach issue by adding in the 300mm f/4L IS, or perhaps the new 100-400, it all depends

If it's true, expect a heft price increase with the way things are going lately.

well now that the 24-70L has been updated...they need something to talk about...the best is reading back about the 24-70L update, and seeing just how long ago their first canon rumors started...i think it was something like 5-6 years ago...and of course in just about every report it had IS...:)

I find the push pull to be very fast and easy to use.
it took me 1 day to get used to it. not a big deal.

as for the optics, I feel theyre very good. My copy is sharp. I can shoot birds 65 ft away with very good results at over 50% crop.

when a new version comes out it will be near $3000 but probably worth every penny.
If I have the money when it launches I will seriously consider getting one. I like my 100-400 that much!

the 200-400 f4L is going to be upwards of $10k. that is in another league so I dont think the new 100-400L (if it ever comes) will take any of its sales. people buying a 10,000 dollar lens will not want a f5.6 version I would think.

The 200-400 is too big and heavy for hiking too...its not just cost

Yup. They predict the imminent release of a new 100-400 every year. And one year they'll get it right. But it ain't this one.

Hmmmm, I was looking at getting a 100-400 rather soon, to wait or not?

same here, I tried to use the push pull thing, I felt so awkward and disturbed I chose primes over that zoom...now if they made it like the 70-200 II we have a winner!

According to Canon Rumours at least one of the beta versions being tested right now uses the "normal" method. Although I have to say I quite like the push-pull action for motorsports.

I'd actually prefer the 200-400 also being beta tested currently.

That depends, they might announce it in 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, no one knows :( .
I could wait for it to be announced to buy my first 400mm but decided to buy the prime as the new 100-400L II will be near the 2,5K range and we don't know when it will be out.
If your not fond of the current version of the 100-400L and you don't need 400mm right away then I think you should wait.
