That looks like a push-pull zoom, but the hood is wrong for it to be the 100-400, so my guess is the 28-300L.

When I read "28-300L" I thought that must be a typo, and you meant the 70-300L. But then I remembered that the 70-300 is a zoom-ring, not push-pull. So I was confused, because I couldn't remember anything about a 28-300L - that seems quite a remarkable zoom range for the "L=luxury" moniker.

But I took a quick look at the Table of Lenses, and there it is. Not cheap, and I guess I forgot about it because it must also be fairly compromised in terms of IQ (probably at the long-end), but wow, what a range of FL...

You and I should form a supporters fan club. We seem to be the only ones who like the push-pull action. I find its far quicker than turning the zoom and for motorsport where vehicles/bikes are travelling at maybe 200 mph thats important.

I'm with you guys. I have a 35-350L (which that lens in the cropped image might be, BTW) and the push/pull is slick to use. I'd definately prefer the new one stays with that formula, and considering how well it's sold as a push-pull, I'm hopeful.

You're not the only ones. A friend of mine let me play with his and I loved that.

The fact is, the current 100-400 still sells and sells and sells. Until that stops happening, there isn't going to be a replacement. Doesn't make a difference for me as I can't afford either lol.

Yeah, you don't often see the L glass and "superzoom" categories mixed up, but there you go. :) It's definitely a compromise, but if you need an all-in-wonder I guess it's the one to get, particularly if you have a full frame and 28mm comes a lot closer to being actual wide angle.

bumping an old thread, I saw they mentioned the re-vamp of the 100-400 to be sooner than expected, so I'm thinking maybe to hold off on the 400L!

if you wait you'll just be missing shots...even if the lens was announced it still might not come out for a while, like the longer primes...the delayed 24-70II...

I like the Push Pull.....BUT. Why can't they design a small air filter on the lens housing that allows better air flow distribution through the lens and not the body.... I mean come on... I can feel air blow through the viewfinder when compressed....
