Problems With Under Exposure

Recently my camera (Canon Rebel XSI 450D) seems to be having problems getting enough light, even in conditions where there appears to be plenty of light. The most recent example of this was during a recent trip where we had a cloudless day, with lighting that would normally cause overexposure. I had my iso set to 100, with an F. stop of 4.0, and the highest shutter speed I could get without the photo being underexposed was 1/100. I believe I would have to be standing on the surface of the sun to get the 1/4000 that the camera is capable of ;). Granted I realize that I could have increased the iso, but something seems off with my camera. I have always seemed to have trouble getting any kind of decent shutter speed with this camera, without the light being quite bright. Any time the light is "ideal" for photography, it always seems to be too dark for my camera to achieve a shutter speed high enough to prevent blurring.

Can you post a pic that you took in bright sunshine as you described above with the EXIF intact?

Using Sunny 16 at f/4 and ISO 100 you'd need to be at 1/1600s for the correct exposure.

Per the Sunny 16 rule, on a sunny day, the proper exposure would be f/16, ISO 100, 1/100 sec. Are you sure the lens is actually open to f/4? What does the exif data show? What exposure mode are you using?

Try this simple test.

On a bright sunny day around noon, set your camera on 100ASA, shutterspeed of 1/100th and aperture of f/16. Normally, this setting should be quite close to a good exposure.

What I'm trying to determine here is, is the problem with your camera's meter or the sensor.

Just a guess here...

I had set the exposure value to underexpose, forgot to re-set it,
and got a similar result to your f16 iso100 100 shot...

not familiar with your camera, does it have an exposure value setting?

Your pictures don't have exif intact. Is this what you had the camera set to or what the actual exif data showed?

The camera is in manual so what is written under the photos is what I set it to, but here is what the data says.

what are you using to view the exif data? Do you have DPP installed? The exif shouldn't look like that normally.

Also, what lens are you using with your camera? When I use old manual focus lenses on my camera, it doesn't show the aperture correctly because I don't have a chip on my adapter, but the exposure time and is fine.

Have you tried shooting in the green box mode to see if the camera does anything different?

Yes, strange EXIF data. "Exposure time 1/8958558, shutter speed 1.0 sec. and f1.0." - what is difference between exposure time and shutter speed? About a million to one apart as 1/8958558 is essentially one millionth of a second and obviously shutter speed is stated as 1.0 sec.

By the way what lens is being used, and is it seated properly into the bayonet mount?

Data in the Bridge?

I used Corel Paint Shop Pro X4 to view the EXIF, in the Image Information section.

As for what lens it was shot with, it is a Canon Ultrasonic 28-105mm.

I'm not sure that lens works with your body unless in manual mode

Alright so here maybe is a better example. The first photo is taken with my SLR, Canon Rebel XSI 450D

The second photo was taken with the same settings with my wife's Canon Power Shot SX130 IS
