I have a ringflash which is very compact and easy to use but would agree with the concensus that a diffused flash gun like the 420EX mounted off camera is probably the way to go for insects and much cheaper.

I'm in the process of getting some prices for some flash guns(420ex,430,580ex, and the sigma). I going for the flash gun over the ring flash because of price, plus I would get more use of the flash gun. Been to busy at work to do much so hopeful will have it sorted out in the next week or 2. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gilder/
