from this summer a fly -although common, ID is very difficult, but probably of the Muscidae family. Not a Robber fly by the way - many flies are opputunist predators or scavengers:

Excellent capture racketman, clear, well framed and great depth of field.

Thanks, taken at f16 with the 60EFS, flash with shutter speed 1/80 to give more background light.
In similar vein here is a Robber Fly in action - only noticed because it flew up from the path but couldnt get far with its rather heavy lunch bag:

Thanks, have you sorted out your flash purchase yet? I have a ringflash which is very compact and easy to use but would agree with the concensus that a diffused flash gun like the 420EX mounted off camera is probably the way to go for insects and much cheaper.
This was ringflashed and got better detail of the eye structure than I normally manage:

Great Pics Racketman- thanks for showing.
Think we had this conversation before, but the first fly is the same type that I have pics of eating another fly.
Last shot with Ringflash is interesting- obviously caught the detail but it does make the image look a bit flat.

I'm in the process of getting some prices for some flash guns(420ex,430,580ex, and the sigma). I going for the flash gun over the ring flash because of price, plus I would get more use of the flash gun. Been to busy at work to do much so hopeful will have it sorted out in the next week or 2.
I like the detail of the fly eye, O I got alot to learn, but its fun.

thanks, only wish I could get that kind of eye detail more often - maybe its to do with light angle?

very nice shot (1st one) the composition is really cool on that one.....
as LordV said the ring flash shot looks kinda flat,(GREAT detail tho) try firing your ringflash with a ratio of 1:4 so that one flash is brighter than the other, that helps to keep the 3d appearance to the images.... or fire only 1 side (1:0 ratio)...
