B&H has been out of the mk IVs for a LONG time. Is canon still making them? I want a 2nd body but not sure if I should go with a mkIV or X. I shoot sports so the 30% loss going to FF will suck if I go to the X.

Thanks!

Canon still lists the 1DS3 and 1D4 on their web site. However I don't know if any are actually available new. Today in essence a photographer is unable to purchase a new Canon pro body. I would think the better business plan would have been to continue availablity of the 1DS3 and 1D4 for a time in tandem with 1DX availability. Then slowly phase out the older bodies. This has been their plan with the consumer level bodies.

1DX MK II, 5D MKIV x2, 24L II, 35L II, 50L, 85LIS, 100LIS Macro, 135L, 16-35LIS, 24-105LIS II, 70-200LIS, 100-400LIS II

"As soon as everyone figures out that they have to buy 400mm to get what a 300m does on the MKIV,,,, canon will hear about it from people other than myself. "

Agree completely.

Hmm.. The same thought has me sitting on my hands too.

Assuming the larger pixels mean a stop less noise, you might be able to get away with a 400/4 instead. This could point to them encouraging purchase of the 200-400/4L (currently rumoured to be pitched at $12k.)

Cropping - well you can't improve on the sensor's intrinsic resolution so I don't see much point offering in-camera cropping when the camera is already squirting out 12 fps on a full frame. It would be a different issue if the camera could produce 27Mp full frame (at say 8 fps) and 16 Mp 1.3 crop as a 12+ fps machine gun... but if they did that we would be complaining that it's yet another incremental upgrade and the noise would be worse than the D4.

Seems Canon has us between a rock and a hard place... Ditch your lenses and take a hit or buy a 1DX and take a hit. Or do nothing and take another hit. :)

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

I would hope/think people who are shooting at the 1D Mark IV level would ALREADY know that going to FF format means they'd lose their pixel-density "reach" they used to enjoy, without having to find out later.

So if Canon hasn't already heard the complaints, then I doubt there will be many more who are going to complain once they get the 1DX in their hands. One would think (or at least hope) those currently shooting at the 1D4 level have a certain level of gear IQ/knowledge, knowing how much they'd lose without having to first put down $7,000 for the new body only to then find out that their lenses are feeling "short".

Or are we now implying that many who are currently shooting with the 1D4 really don't know their own tool and are ignorance of the 1.3x crop factor?

To me, everything about the 1Dx looks great until you get past 200MM.

F/4 glass is much cheaper than F/2.8 glass so with the iso capabilties of the 1Dx, F/4 glass will be extremely usable. I would much rather use a 24-105 v/s a 24-70 and with (is) and the extra ISO punch, who the heck needs a brick. Same with a 70-200 F/4(is) and the 17-40......lots of bucks saved there,,,,,,,,,big plus for the 1Dx. Get a 50 and an 85 for shallow depth work and your set.

the AF system on the 1Dx is going to be killer for low light work when servo is needed plus its a heck of alot more sensative than the MKIV.

But guys that want and need reach past 200MM are not going to be happy especially with the F/8 issue and TC's. Kenko will make a fortune for a while.

I just dont think canon has thought this through or they simply dont give a dam. Either way, Im really glad i baught an MKIV in November when this thing was announced.

When I got my 1DIV a few weeks ago the national retailer I bought it from here in the UK got six of them into stock. From them listing the stock availability to me buying the last one available was all of 2 days. Wouldn't you think that would tell Canon something?
