These pics are from 5/27/12. This was only our 2nd trip of the season so needless to say we were absolutely thrilled with our sightings. When I say we by the way, I'm referring to my mother and I. She's my whale watching buddy.

We had some surface feeding, but the highlights of the trip included an adult male named Putter who was lobtailing. This is when they take their flukes and just keep slapping the surface of the water. We got some fantastic looks at this behavior.

Shortly after we left Putter we found another whale to spend time with. This was a young whale, probably about 4 or 5 and her name was Sanchal. She became very curious about the boat and started to roll around and check us out. This went on for about 20 minutes before we had to slowly ease out of the area.

There was a group of kids on the boat today and they were in awe with their sightings, especially when Sanchal started to roll and raised her flipper out of the water just inches away from them. I'm sure they'll all remember this encounter!

Since the T3i does video too I was able to get some of these encounters on video. If you want to see them here are the links:

WOW !!! do you not get scared that Sanchal might cause accidental damage to the boat with her majestic tail ?

No worries there. When we get to where the whales are, the engines are cut. We more or less just drift with them in the current. When we leave we have to make sure that we're clear of the whales. The whale watch tours are very careful not to injure any of whales.

Nope, there haven't been any documented cases here of whales "hurting" the boats. They're actually very used to boats now and I've personally never seen one of them physically touch the boat. I've seen them come very close though. The boat that this was taken on is a 100'+ boat,

Great pics! we are planning a vaca to bar harbor as well as the cape at the end of July. Any advice? Is one site better than the other? I was thinking the cape since it sticks out more into the Atlantic

Thanks
