lots of books available - depending again on the style of photography you are into

A (basic, yet informative) class and homework type set up: http://www.michaelthementor.com/ (external link)

Youtube has some great vids from Adorama, B&H Photo, and many many others. I'm too lazy to post all the links right now.

How far are you from Chicago? Calumet offers many weekend workshops worth checking out.

Also take a look at your local community college and adult education.

First of all, thanks to everyone that has replied, I really appreciate that a lot, the reason I got into this
(hobbie) for me is to take pics of my kids so portraits is what I want to master.
I have seen some of the pics other members post and they are just fantastic.

Welcome to POTN . What part of Indiana are you from?

I realize you specified free online classes, but you still may want to consider local, inexpensive choices too. Community colleges, photographic societies, high school evening classes - in my area there are a wealth of these. I'd think Indy would be similar. They often cost, but there's a lot to be said from hands on learning with other folks in the same boat :D. Just my .02.

Neil van Niekerk has a great blog with all kinds of discussions on lighting, using flash, camera settings, etc. He might be a little advanced for a green newbie, but he's a great teacher.
If you look along the right hand side of the page, there is a table of contents, of sorts.

reading online tutorials and blogs could be better than actual classes, this is a good one on lighting
