Given the weather, I'm shooting more and more outside, and moving away from natural light / reflectors and back towards speedlights. Here's my debacle, what would you do:

I own:

  • Canon 580ex II
  • Canon Power Pack-E, used a bunch of C-cell batteries
  • Vivitar 285HV
  • 3 AB800's
  • AB Ring Flash
  • 2 rectangular & 1 octa softbox
  • 1 Beauty Dish
Scenario: You need to hike at least 1 mile to get to the location. Everything must be carried in 1 trip. I already have a great Crumpler backpack that holds all my camera gear, flashes, etc, and have rigged an easy way to attach light stands to it. I'd probably have to hand-carry softboxes for the AB's, but have a Speedlight softbox that clips to my Crumpler bag nicely.

1. I like using the 285 because it's dead simple, I have a mpex hotshoe > 1/8" adapter for my trigger and it just works great. It's also super cheap, if it falls over from a gust of wind, I'm out a $80 flash unit, no biggie. Downside is the recycle time blows chunks and I'm stuck at 1/200th sync speed. Solution: http://www.aljacobs.com (external link) Black Box + sync cable, near instant recycle times but at a cost of $245. Weight = 2lbs.

2. 580ex II + existing power pack, perhaps look into rechargeable C-cell batteries since buying them can get spendy. Cost = $0, I already own everything. Downside, if it falls over I'm out a $450 flash unit. Ideally, though, I'd like to get these http://www.phottix.com …sh-trigger-for-canon.html (external link) so I can utilize high speed sync for shallow depth of field when shooting models, cost $385.

3. Vagabond Mini Lith power pack for the ABs, http://www.paulcbuff.com/vm120.php (external link). I can power TWO ABs on location with one 3.5 battery, cost is $240, so it's a wash with option 1 already. Downside, carrying one or two ABs can be a total pain and no high speed sync, total upside is FAR more controllable power, far more power overall, easily use two units.

Not sure what the best use of money is. I know that the Odin system is probably what I should do, since I already have a power pack, even though it's the most expensive option, it would be the most flexible I think, and the easiest to carry. Additional 430 flashes are $260 + $125 for another Odin receiver, so adding a 2nd light isn't exactly cheap, but the gains are still very portable, high speed sync and controllable via transmitter.

Thoughts / input / suggestion?

How many lights will you need? What are you shooting and at what time of day?

Get the VML (or three) and a big suitcase with wheels.

I can make due with 1, time of day will be everything from early morning / mid day / later afternoon / early evening.

The mid day / late afternoon is what kills me. When I shoot models outside I prefer to under-expose the sky by 1-2 full stops at that time of day and then use flash to fill in, so cutting the harsh shadows can be really tricky.

For early morning / early evening stuff I'm using flash as a fill and / or rim light with the softer / warmer light.

Your question makes it seem like you were getting ideas for a specific shoot. You cant really expect to battle daylight with a single speedlite, even using HSS.

I have this case for studio gear http://www.photoflex.com …/transpac-single-kit-case (external link) and it's amazing - but I don't want to wheel anything, most of the time I'll be in grass, woods, fields, or in the case of yesterday's shoot, an industrial park which involved going up and down 6 flights of stairs several times.

gonzogolf - I know there's no way a single speedlight will over-power the sun. I also know there's no one shoe fits all for everything, but I want to ideally get the most bang for the buck across the board for my "travel pack"

Bang for the buckwise its hard to beat alien bees and a VML. Its the solution with the most power, still portable (although not enough to hike in a mile in one trip with a bag) and can handle large modifiers.

Get a nice cart with pneumatic wheels. Load up couple of ABs with VML and you set. I would pick AB1600. AB800 even with BD won't give enough flash exposure.

Forget Al Jacobs. It only gives more pops, doesn't lower recycling time.

Also forget HSS mode. Use ND filters if you need to shoot wide apertures.

Depending on where you shoot and live, buy an actual mule.

But a well designed two wheeled cart can get a lot of gear into a lot of places. Don't think that just because you're going into the woods or up/down stairs means you have to carry everything the whole way.

Shoot the location bg with no lighting/no model. Shoot the model(s) in the studio and composit.

Or hire a helicopter pilot if it's a paying gig.
