Does anyone know of a good book to learn more about how to frame yourself? I am interested in buying supplies in bulk (frames, mats, glass) in certain sizes and attempt framing prints on my own.

This book seems to have good reviews but can only bought used on Amazon - http://www.amazon.com …/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top (external link)

There is this one with only 2 reviews - http://www.amazon.com …1402727836/ref=pd_sim_b_6 (external link)

This one is from 1998 and seems to be outdated - http://www.amazon.com …rds=how+to+frame+pictures (external link)

This looks interesting - http://www.amazon.com …rds=how+to+frame+pictures (external link)

Thanks in advance!

I have the book from your first link. It was very helpful, but I learned the most from the instructional DVD video that came with my Logan mat cutter.

I assume you wish to cut your own mats? You message sounds like you're buying all the components -- in required sizes -- and just assembling. You don't need anything but a good point driver and other associated hanging do-dads for that.

I make my own frame moudling, cut my own mats, and get 3/32" clear frame glass from my local glass place. It can be time consuming, but I love the results and enjoy displaying my work in exactly the sizes I wish. :D

If you want to go semi-custom, try FrameDesintation.com. That's where I get black frames -- and acrylic for those jobs where I don't want to use glass. You can spec an entire package, but I buy just the components I need. Very good customer service and better prices than I've found elsewhere. I also have watched their on-line how-to videos on assembling frames, which gave me a few pointers.

I typically buy mat board and foam backer board from DickBlick.com, but there are many sources for those items.

Cheers,

Gary

Gary,

Thank for your response and valuable information. You are correct. I just want to buy the components and put them all together. I want to offer only 2-3 sizes of prints in frames - 8x12 & 12x18, 16x24.

Would you recommend the first book to me?

I think the book is still very helpful. If it's used and cheap, why not pick it up...

I'd still recommend Frame Destination (external link) to get started. They have some good articles and some basic video instruction. I've never used their mats, so I'm not sure what brand they use. You get the option of having them install points (tiny metal tabs that hold the contents in the frame) into the frame at the depth you specify for no extra charge. They're happy to answer questions if something isn't clear.

I use 3M PMA adhesive to mount my photos to the foamboard (something I learned from that book). It's a bit $$$ for a 50' roll, but Amazon has an excellent price.

I also prefer glass to acrylic, but if I have to ship something, I'll pay a bit more and get acrylic. The glass I use isn't fancy or particularly UV filtering, but it's only ~$4/square ft.

I can mount and frame a 12x18 photo as an 18x24 piece of artwork for ~$25 in materials if I make my own hardwood frames. Of course, I spend a lot of time on each step, but I enjoy the process.

Cheers,

Gary
