Hey All!

I'm thinking about buying the "Brick" Canon 24-70L lens. Have any body tried that lens before with the Canon XSi? If so, can you post some pictures for me please. I know the lens is pretty expensive so I want make sure is not too much lens for my camera. :)

I dont have that lens or camera, but.
I used to have the XS with a 100L, Tamron 18-55 2.8, and once rented the 24-105L. They all worked great. The only problem was that I hit the camera limit. Iso 1600 was very noisy. F/2.8 can do so much before you have to increase ISO or use a flash. So I upgraded :) My T2i brings a lot of extras to the table too.

It will work well, the only issue with the XSi vs newer bodies is, as vapore0n stated, lower ISO abilities. That won't affect your shooting with the 24-70 under most circumstances though. I would suggest that you look closely at the EF-S17-55 IS though, it's generally a better match for crop bodies.

I have the 24-70 for my 7D and it works fine. You'll get a few people that will tell you to get the 17-55 f2.8 IS, I for one love my 24-70.

I also choose to get all EF lenses for the future as I knew I would be adding a full frame body to my set up, so I'd want to get something that would work on both bodies so it just depends on whether or not you plan to do the same in the future.

Also the 24-70 isn't "Too much lens for (your) my camera", I've used it on my step mothers Xsi and it works the same way as it does on any other camera.

Just take into consideration on what you have planned and if you plan on upgrading to a new body any time. The biggest thing between the 17-55 and the 24-70 is the focal length and weather sealing. Weather sealing is cool but you don't have a sealed body so it wouldn't matter much.

another option is the EF-S 15-85 IS lens as well. you could pick that up with a basic lighting kit to help you move into lighitng.

Thanks,

I already have the 70-200 so I don't want to overlap any mm's. That's why I want the 24-70mm And yes, I will upgrade the camera in the future :P

I picked up (literally) a 7D and the 24-70 and it was front heavy and unbalanced. It is going to be a bear on an XSi. I'd go for something lighter and better suited to the smaller body.
The camera can make use of good glass, but the 24-70 is a heavy beast.

What would you guys in this situation?

My Gear: Canon XSi

I have this Lens: 50mm 1.8 II, Kit Lens 18-55 and the 70-200 F4L

My choices are this two...

Either buy the Canon 7D or use the money for a Glass.

same boat as you... i am waiting for photokina in sept for possible release of 7d2 or 70d. the xsi is a trooper!

to answer your question, i think you might want glass if you shoot more on the wide end.

As was mentioned, it's a big lens. You could pick up a grip for around $30 on ebay and then the size wouldn't be an issue. I use a grip on my XSi and it balances much better with bigger lenses. The 24-70 is an awesome lens, best lens available in that range.

There is no such thing as "too much lens for your camera"; unless you are feeling limited by the older body go for the lens. Good glass is never a waste of money.

Or you could just use good technique and support the lens with your other hand. Buying a bigger body just for the lens makes the whole thing heavier...doesn't it? Obviously few here have supported big glass on an old fashioned (AE-1) film body. There wasn't any grip, you supported your glass with your left hand.

In your situation, I'd go glass right now.
