Hey guys,

So I've got my first engagement shoot this saturday, and I was wanting some advice in regards to shooting the rings. Is it necessary to have a macro lens? I have the MPE65, but I don't think I will take it along given the tediousness of focusing. I'm hoping to use either my 70-200 IS II or 85L II, but I'm not sure I will be able to capture the detail given the minimum focus distance.

I'll be taking the following along this saturday:

7D / 17-55
5D3 / 85L II / 16-35 II / 24-105 /70-200 IS II 2.8

Any ideas regarding techniques / lens choice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It depends what kind of images you want to create. I don't rate close up ring shots as particularly important, when I do them I use an extension tube on my 24-70 - much cheaper than a macro lens. Often I'll just use the 24-70 and make the ring photo more environmental, of have them on their hands.

If you don't need a 1:1 macro ring shot, then maybe use your 24-105L? The MFD on that lens is pretty small right? But it really depends on what type of shot you are going for.

hmmm, yeah i might give it a go! i'll probably be extended @ 105 though. what do you use for your setup? is it worth investing in kenko tubes?

Can you get a hold of a ring? Maybe test out how close you can get?
I have the 100L so I use that for ring shots. You can also get Kenko tubes. Much cheaper and for the few shots you'll need to get close, that might be the better way to go.

I have a macro and bring it every time. The reality is, though, I'm not great about switching lenses. So even though it's in the bag, I tend to shoot details with the 24-70 mounted to a 1.6 body and just do a little cropping.
