Well while looking to see if i had paid someone with paypal i discovered i had several hundred stored away that i completely forgot about. Im going to try and sell some old truck parts on ebay and a few other goodies and i might just be able to come close to having enough for my dream lens............canon ef 70-200 f2.8L with or without IS.

But i'de like to find a deal on this lens, can anyone recommend a site? dell? amazon?

Non-IS goes for about $1120-$1140. Not much variation. Don't forget the $40-$120 rebate.

B&H sells the IS version for $1600 before a $50-$150 rebate.

That's $1700 for the IS. $1699.95, to be precise, for the US version. With the rebate that's cheaper than the "grey market" at $1659.95. I just got one.

If i can come up with the money i think im going to get the non IS version. It would take forever to get the extra $4-600 for it.

Their special show price is $1599 before rebate. I won't post the link here, but it's easy to find if you search in the usual places.

You will be very happy with the non-L if that is all the budget can swing. It's hand holdable with ease for action shots, however for stills and the like I need a mono-pod or tripod, but that's nothing new. I invested in a quality set of manfrotto gear, and it still was much much less then the IS option for me.

If you are looking at the non-IS version you should also check out the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8.

Why get the Canon non-IS when you can get the Sigma version of the lens for a lot less, and it's meant to be just as good?

Is the sigma really going to be just as good as the canon "L" version? i mean i'de love to save some money but if the "L" is worth the extra cash i'll spend more.

If you can, you should test them.

The L will give you some advantages, but nothing that really makes people claim its worth the extra hundreds of dollars.

Better saturation, contraast, faster AF are some of the advantages top L's carry along with beautiful bokeh. Remember, the Non IS doesn't have the weather sealing.

I owned the Sigma for a while before getting the IS version. I could easily live with the Sigma if I had to still though.

If i go the 300 2.8 range, I'm sure i'll get the 120-300 2.8 by Sigma. They make good lens too.

You will do well with either. I do think that you'll be selling your 70-300, though. I had my 80-200L for all of 45 minutes and I knew I'd almost never put the Sigma 70-300 on my camera again....I sold it pretty quickly.
