Ok I just did again and when I try to open it I get a window that says windows needs to need what program is needed to open this file?

Don't try to open it, it's not an app that Windows can open. Just either save it onto your desktop or your downloads folder, then copy it from there onto your camera's CF card. Be sure to follow the insructions in the other file, like put your camera in "P" mode to do this.

The file that you download is eos7d-v200-win.zip, which is, obviously, a .ZIP file. Right click on the file and select "Extract All". This will extract the
folder, update-procedure-pdf, which contains further instructions in various languages in Adobe .PDF format. Find the .PDF instructions in the language of your choice and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!

If in doubt download winzip or winrar and use that to extract the downloaded file to a folder. Just right click on the file you downloaded and select extract with whichever program (winzip or winrar) you are using.

No need to D/L winzip or winrar. Windows has native .ZIP file extraction capability, at least my copy of XP does, and I assume that more recent versions do too.

What's the exact name of the file you are trying to extract? It sounds like you are trying to open a file rather than extract it. What operating system are you using? Windows or Apple?

I am using windows when asked I open the file it downloads I double click on the fir file and I get the window that says windows needs to know which program is needed to open this file

As a number of people have already pointed out, you NEED to read the file named:

7d-firmwareupdate-en.pdf

Which is located in the folder named: update-procedure-pdf

And follow the directions to the letter.

You do not double click on the fir file. The fir file is the firmware file that is to be installed on your camera. It is to be copied to your CF card.

No, you do not need them to update. You need them to work with the photos made with ver. 2.0 FW.

No, if you use the directions in the PDF file "7d-firmwareupdate-en.pdf" then you can do it directly rather than through DPP. You need to copy the .fir file to the root directory of your CF to do it without using DPP. Just follow the directions in the "7d-firmwareupdate-en.pdf" file and it will work fine.

I also have a silly question - Why would you not?

You don't need DPP for the firmware undate, but if you use it, again, why not have the latest?
