Took some snaps at my next door neighbor's youth baseball game for the parents. Game was supposed to start at 8:15 which would have left some good light for my 100-400 f/5.6 lens. Warm-up session began at 8:45 and got no game shots 'til probably 9:00.

These look horribly noisy to me, but do they appear to be in the acceptable range for a 5D2? Obviously, I try NOT to shoot at ISO 4000 - 6400, but had to last night. Both shots had good exposure SOOC.

Example 1: f/5.6; 1/640; ISO 4000

Example 2: f/5.6; 1/250; ISO 6400

Thanks for looking and offering an opinion.

I think they look good. Better noisy shots than no shots! I really like the first one.

those are a little noisy, but if you print them out, it wont be a problem. You can probably play with the noise sliders and get super clean images.

Yeah, I probably should have used the noise reduction in DPP before I processed them in PSE. Guess I can go back and do it again! Thanks for the tip and your opinion.

True. Now I wish I'd not sold the 70-200 f/2.8L IS!

What lens? And why F/5.6? Seems like you could've had a wider aperture and dropped the ISO a bit.

- Nikon D3300
- Nikon 35mm F/1.8
- Sigma 17-70mm F/2.8-4 Cont.
- Tokina 100mm F/2.8 MACRO

I would always shoot at a higher exposure at a higher ISO, then bring down the exposure in the raw later. You had what seems to be about a stop extra headroom maybe? The skies and headgear would have blown out, but not sure how much they add to the overall pic.

Examples, but with the 1D4, I tried to find some that were close to your settings, and these were run through one of my noise filters, to be fair. Your shots look pretty good though, definitely a sound foundation from which to tweak settings and processing.

There's one problem (you didn't run NR), and your next one is your'e about to use DPP's NR, which is pretty bad.

I agree with Moderator in training Teamspeed. Overexpose your high iso shots by about 1 stop and the noise issue minimizes greatly.

Now if we could just teach these gals to keep their eyes OPEN when hitting the ball, that is our 2 team's major issue. That and not being able to catch a grounder... :D

I found this pic of mine using the 5D2 for an indoor basketball game, nearly at the same exposure settings, but I made sure they were just to the right enough to not blow highlights, then post processed them back.

So are you then using LR or some other form of noise reduction in addition to backing down the exposure?

I call out most of what I do in my "High ISO 7D" thread (click my mini-reviews link in my signature). I use Noiseware as a basis for what I do, however there are a few other filters and steps I run to help Noiseware do its thing.

Dave's pics are quite good if you go look at the 1600 sized images. The 2nd one still renders detail in the dirt and clothing, etc, and I don't think it would require very much to clean it up and sharpen it a bit.

Not one parent is going to notice any noise in these.
