I went back 3 times to see more of these critters... rick_reno wrote in post #14646235 wow, wonder how they decide which one gets fed first There were other species there too. There seemed to be an order of a sequence and frequency they received the food... John Stoy

WallaceRiver " ...a bit of a pervy voyeur " More info | Terrific shots, John! Our swallows have flown and I missed the "out-of-the-nest" shots. Glad you got these! On Rick's question about order, I saw Mom swallow feed the biggest at the doorway most frequently, but sometimes she would just push past the two or three in the doorway and go inside to make sure the (presumably) smallest one got fed too. Interesting to see. IAN - Living life on the shores of the Wallace River in northern Nova Scotia, Canada :

Interesting to see. Thanks for the positive feedback WallaceRiver... since these little critters ended up on the branches of this dead pine tree, they reposition themselves hoping to get the food first... some on the tippy top of the branch are passed up and the little one further in, gets fed the bug... They are gradually starting to fly out, and meet mom in the air for their meal... I'll try to get back there this weekend to check out their progress, wondering if they all fly now, or are some still fed on the branch... AZGeorge wrote in post #14650362 Wow. I agree re#2, that the detail of the venation on the dragonfly wings makes for a technical quality shot... and I favor this pic for an enlargement, perhaps 20x30? Though the 5 little ones have a fan base of all the moms and kids around here... photocopy wrote in post #14650363 wow.. excellent action shots!! you were sure there at the right time!! in the first pic the little one up in the air says ME FIRST..ME FIRST!! Photocopy; thanks for the great feedback... I live just 3 miles from this location, and was able to shoot in RAW; at 8 AM, for about 2 hours, and rush home to review the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture settings... by 1:30 PM, the sun had reversed it's angle in my favor, for more subtle lighting... The wind was blowing around 20-30mph most of the day... and the little birds faced in various directions trying to either fly w the wind, or stay braced in place... while all this time, the feeding attempts were successful... I needed to shoot in High Shutter Speed for best results... John Stoy

This one is perhaps one of my best, on the run, action shots... I'm impressed by the detail in the dragonfly wings... It will enlarge well... The Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens did it's job... Cheers!!!
