Hey all, new member here, just wanting to introduce myself. (I'll fill out the profile ASAP)

Today I finally got my first DSLR, and from the few photos I've taken, I know I love it!

I'm by no means an expert, so I'm still in the learning/exploratory phase. I used to use a Nikon back in High School to photograph the things we did for our Robotics Club.

Tonight, I'm looking at taking a few night shots. Through a deal at Costco, I managed to get a 18-200MM lens with 72mm diameter instead of the 18-135mm lens with 67mm diameter that seems to come with the camera normally.

Any tips or settings I should try to make the most of my shots??

I live in San Antonio, so the skies are usually clear (not tonight, of course!! :( ).

Welcome to the forum. Learn about exposing to the right. Check out back button AF. Some love it and some don't.

Welcome to the 60D community VailFanatic (is the nick because of skiing?).

Check out two threads where the 60D owners congregate.

You might want to go over to the Canon made on-line tutorials specifically for the 60D at http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …s/eos_60d_tutorials.shtml (external link). They are very well done and you can learn a great deal about the 60D by watching them with camera in hand. If you follow the instructions carefully you can also place all the tutorials on an 8 GB SDHC card and watch them in-camera. Sometimes handy, maybe a long plane ride and you just want to review something like back button focus.

Note that there are 14 topics and you scroll left/right near the bottom to change.

Actually, the nick is reference to my love for Steve Vai. His guitar playing is what I mostly emulate! But thanks for pointing me to the hang-out zones! I'll be sure to drop in!

I'm checking these out after I read the Newbie guide! Thanks a lot for the warm welcome, everyone, and the helpful resources.

The best thing to do with your new camera is just go out and shoot! Walk around and play with all the settings and see what you can come up with. Thats how I learned everything!

That's close to what I've been doing! I need to work on steadying my hand a bit more (no tripod right now).
