Since new firmware has just been released for the 7D you might just want to start with a flash of the latest and greatest. It just might help and likely will be something you do anyway in the near future. Go to https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1201244 for the details.

Um, not quite. The firmware has only been announced, it won't actually be available for another month or so. (8/7 I believe)

While the new firmware will be nice, the camera should work properly without it. I would suggest the problem be found and solved before compounding the variables by putting new software in the camera

Thanks to the tips found here, I think the problem is in the 50mm lens. When I tried it on a different body, it still did the "zooming and shaking" behavior and was unable to focus. Is this something I should contact Canon support about?

That lens is known for hunting in low light conditions. That may be normal, but I would try it in brighter conditions to check if the lens has a problem. Also, take it to a camera store and try to compare it with another lens of the same type.

Contrary to DennisW1, the firmware is available now. See the thread at https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1201244. The August date is a date that Canon stated "all cameras shipped after 8/7/12 would have the firmware upodate."

I can't find it. Where is it available?

Funny. Canon disagrees with you.

Hmmm, sorry folks, I could have sworn I found the actual firmware upgrade the other day. Seems to me it was an aussie or japan site.

Nope, they get it in august too.

Your original comment that it was available for download but that the august date was when they would start putting it in the cameras didn't make sense. Why would they wait so long to place it in the production cameras if it was available for download already.

I am having a similar issue. I have a 7d (and a 10d, an t2i). I know what autofocus is supposed to do. I can't get mine to auto focus properly. Sometimes I hold the button 1/2 way down, and It just won't do anything .... Not even hunt. Other times, I think it has said the middle of the photo was in focus and it wasn't. Other times, the picture looks like its in focus, but I never get a focus confirmation. Any ideas? It has literally ruined 2 events I was shooting?
