It's Friday afternoon. The boss is gone. I'm stuck here for another 3 hours and 18 minutes.

Is the boss coming back? If not, just lock up and duck out early... ;)

Wish I could. But there's way too many people around here that would notice if the whole department was closed down early.

yeah, that is a bummer...

I have a boss who is ALWAYS in, even with 2-3 ft of snow, he will come in.... which means, you can't leave early, or just come into work when you "feel like it". But at the same time, if you need to get out early etc., he has no qualms about that.

Since I left the frozen tundra where I too had a unreasonable boss (I'm sure you never noticed) who liked to count noses, I now work for a guy who believed we are all adults and what is important is that the work get done. If I need to be in the office, then I'm here. If I can be elsewhere, then I do that. It is so refreshing to work here. It also helps that my boss is in Finland and I'm responsible for the folks here I suppose, but I'm not a nose counter and treat my guys the same. #1 work gets done irrespective of location or time. That's all that matters.

I had a boss like that once. That was a long, long time ago. Way back when it was actually *fun* to go to work.

Weird how that's when everyone was also the most productive, huh? Go figure that one out...

In this trade it's pretty much impossible for the work to get done without being here. This boss is pretty reasonable when it comes to needing some time off. If we're slow he has no problem with me taking a longer lunch to get a few things done. I don't often ask for it, but occasionally you just need to do something during business hours.

My first job out of college was as a model maker/machinist. Our standard work week was 60.5 hours. About year 2 someone way up there decided to reduce it to 48 hours over the objections of some of the old school partners. It surprised them that productivity went up. More was getting done in 48 hours than in 60.5 and the just couldn't figure it out. :)

For me it was simple, running a sprint, you put a lot of energy into it but gotta run a marathon, your gonna pace yourself appropriately. At 48 hours most spent the bulk of the day actually working where at 60.5 hours, you would chat with your co-workers and goof of a bit more. We tried to convince them that we would be even more productive at 40 hours but the old school guys wouldn't budge.

I know for sure that in this job the productivity really drops off as the hours get higher. A person gets tired. Some jobs are ok with working 10 hour shifts, but this one definitely is not. If there's lots of work to be done, you're physically spent by the end of the day. If there's not much work coming in, the knees and back start to get fatigued from standing around too much. Working in the summer heat doesn't help either. When it was really hot, by 3pm everyone's brain was fried and we all wanted naps.

 I already have a bit... Another guy from work and I just keep an eye on ours throughout the day and vent when everything is down and make a big deal when all of our stocks are up.

It's rather entertaining.

Don't get me wrong, I read the WSJ everyday, but unless there's something in there that could be adverse to any of my positions, I don't spend a lot of time counting gains or losses.

OTOH, I do have a bet going with a friend regarding HPQ and FB's race to bottom and where they'll be by the end of 2012. The loser gets to buy dinner for 4 in the City in January 2013. :-)

My bet would be on FB.
