Whenever we road tripped from Chicago I always liked to leave really early, 3~4 or so. THe first 3~4 hours out of Chicago is really boring with absolutely nothing to look at so might as well do it in the dark with no traffic.

Early starts are my preference too, but my better half is not a morning person. It's a serious challenge to get her out of the house by 9:00am.

It was either that or fly at 6am which would have meant getting up at 2 anyhow :)

9 hours is just over the limit where I do not consider flying an option. 6~7 it's usually cheaper and less of a hassle to drive. Figure a hour to get to the airport, 2 hours waiting in the airport, 1~2 airtime, hour getting to your location at the other end and that's if there are no delays or cancellations so that put's you at 6 right there.

That works from a time equation standpoint. But for me, on a run down to LA, unless I buy the ticket at the last minute, the airfare is frequently less than the cost of gas to drive down. Not to mention the wear and tear on the car.

I saw humping at one point. I know its San Fran and all, but... there is no humping in football.. It's just wrong.

 ! As long as the humping occurs when taking down the opponents QB i am okay with it ;)

I actually like "long haul" driving. I find it oddly therapeutic.

Having now both flown and driven to Oshkosh, I actually prefer the drive. 3.5 days of seeing stuff from ground level is kind of nice. Driving also allows me a lot more gear hauling ability.

Eastern Colorado and the wide open plains are kind of mesmerizing. Call it the "Dances With Wolves" effect. :D

BTW, Ken Burns' new doc on PBS regarding the Dust Bowl. Really worth a watch. Amazing what people put up with on the Great Plains for literally YEARS!

Lame is a quarterback that you don't even trust to throw the ball 20 times in a game.

28 pass attemps over 2 games? Some QB's have that in a half... And seriously those two "games" were against the Cardinals and the Rams...

I wouldn't trust Phillip Rivers to throw 20 times in a game. There's too much of a chance he'd throw it to the other team...

Right, normally we would fly, no questions asked. But short, short notice made flights available at $600 return for both myself and Betsy. Alexander flies free. Then add on the hotel bill - an additional $250, a rental car for 4 days comes to $275 over thanksgiving, it surely adds up. Oh and don't forget the airport parking at $18 a day!

Driving was the no brainer here.

Same here. I don't have anything against flying. I just prefer to travel on the ground. And, I usually take my time and make lots of stops along the way, wherever I'm headed, too.

I DVR'd it, but I haven't watched it yet. Maybe that's what I'll do this afternoon.

Same here. I did the trip from Dallas to Chicago a few times. It's only 16.5 hours of driving time which I spread over two days, but it's a very relaxed drive. I just pop in an audio book and relax.

It really is interesting, but put up with isn't quite right. They caused the issue in the first place. There was another show on the walking of the Easter Island heads and they were talking about the islands deforestation and the cause. For so lone we assumed it was to roll the giant heads so they cut down the trees and now the thinking is that the trees were cut down for agriculture and they killed the island. Just goes to show, it never pays to mess with mama nature.
