I was looking at RAMs on OWC site and saw one of the suggestions was 2x8 total of 16GB ram to my computer. I know it supports up to 8 (as its mentioned on apple site) then googled it and saw lots of people using 16 GB without any issues.
is this somesort of hardware hack?

nope. I put 16GB in my friend's early 2011 13" MBP and it works without any issues.

Apple typically states the maximum RAM based upon what's available at the time of the computer's release. If larger RAM chips ship after that release date Apple does not update the computer's specification. If OWC says 16 gb, then it'll work. Those guys know their business.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Also, from here (external link):

*Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules.

I don't know why they are holding this information? Maybe a support issue but it is a HUGE selling point for creative professionals. Then again their new MacBooks are 16GB so it would be competing against youself i guess.
