Something a little different for me. Had a chance on 6/26 to shoot my first "commercial" gig in the aviation world. Cutter Aviation in Phoenix has designed a new instrument panel for the Piper Meridian using flat-panel displays from Garmin (their G950 series) and Cutter wanted something snappy for advertising and trade shows:

Really bad G12 shot of the exterior of the subject

The panel and interior as it looked back on 6/21 (still some work to be done!)

Lighting Diagram (the snooted 580s sat in their Canon OEM "feet" on the floor)

One Exposure to capture the displays

Second exposure with my lighting

Layer, Mask, Dodge, Burn, Spin, Trust, Parry and you get:

C&C Most Welcome...

Nice job. Those glass cockpits are really cool.

One mom-and-pop shop I worked in was building the structures for a glass cockpit upgrade for DC-10 cargo aircraft. The problem was, they had people working on them that knew nothing about how to use tooling and jigs. Several of the ones I finished were shipped with major flaws because they were mis-drilled and riveted. I couldn't correct the problems without scrapping half the assembly. Additionally, the shop had nothing in the way of proper tools. What little I had of my own helped somewhat, but I really needed a good stand-up riveter. Nothing like working on the cheap...

Super job, Jay. Those display panels are super neat. I'm curious about why you totally blacked the floor out though. It seems more distracting to me to have that "bottomless pit" below the panels than the grey floor. I'd certainly darken the carpet, but I don't think I'd have gone totally black. Did you try a version somewhere in between?

The carpet was temporary and very wrinkled so it was basically impossible to get it to read without having giant "snake shadows" dancing across it.

The client gets final say on how the image will ultimately be used so it's possible they'll crop it to the bottom of the panel and you'll never see that part anyways. One of their desired uses was on a banner for trade shows and since banners are wide but short, I have a hunch that's what they'll do.
