In particular, I'm wondering what the best way is to "submit" photos to magazines and other periodicals and even internet sites.

I do the photography for two bands, both of which are fairly new bands but have toured nationally with a couple of decent larger acts. Everything from promo shots, live shots, and shoots for cover/concept art, etc...

My goal is two-fold: get my work out there, and get the band's work and exposure out there.

What's the best way to submit photos and editorial about these bands besides just sending out emails and hoping for the best?

Thanks!

Is it a dumb question? Or a tight-lipped thing?

I wish I could help you more with the main part of your question, but all I can suggest is be careful about trying to promote the band. I do promotional work from time to time and the one thing that I don't tolerate is anyone else dipping their toes in. It causes massive confusion and an unorganized appearance if two people happen to solicit the same publication.

I would assume having toured nationally that there is someone handling the bookings and promotional work. Best to leave them to it. Concurrently, that could also be a better approach to your main goal as well. Seeing as any editorial promotional work done would likely use your photos to begin with, there should be a clause in your license agreement, best stated in your boilerplate that accompanies, saying that all submissions to publications are to be accompanied with a photo credit. That way the bands promote themselves, use your photos with a "© 2012 Logicus" and you get the credit you deserve without having to do more work than you have to.

There are 2 major ways to do it.
1) Wire (Getty Images, AP, etc)
2) Contact the publication directly and talk to them about shooting for them.

I just signed with Getty and while talking to the head guy he said that he gets about a hundred emails a day from people wanting to shoot for them, so you need to make sure your portfolio is top.
