hi. i have a canon 600d dslr. as from today, i am unable to select any creative modes ( Av, M, P or Tv ) - the lcd remains blank, and unable to shoot.

also in other modes ( eg auto, landscape etc ), i get the message "this function is not selectable in this shooting mode", although it takes pictures in these modes.

is my camera broken??? thanks. been trawling the net, but no anwers.

When in modes such as auto and landscape, the camera does all of the work so you can't change any of the settings and "this function is not selectable in this shooting mode" pops up if, lets say you try to change your shutter speed, but you can still press the shutter button and take a picture.

As for the creative mode problem, try pressing the info button. Can you hear the shutter actuate if you press the shutter button?

when changing dial to e.g Av, lcd flashes up the usual display screen for Av, then quickly disappears and goes black again. does this for all creative modes.

unable to press shutter or focus.

pressing menu or info on creative modes does not get any response. ( works in other modes )

also, using zoom with lens on creative modes is making a strange noise not apparent in other modes ( have tried different lens' )

How long have you had your 600D? If you bought it from a reputable dealer recently I would exchange it.

Have you taken out the battery (or both if yours has small 'button' cell inside the battery holder as well) wait a minute or so and then put them back in and see if this helps.

I wasn't questioning the battery, but by removing the battery it will reset the camera, but some older(?) models had a little button cell tucked away inside the battery holder as well and this also has to be removed to perform a reset. I don't think the newer models have theres though?

The 600D manual seems to indicate that there is a button cell, but I only own a 50D.

steg100, what NinetyEight meant was, removing the battery and back-up button cell battery resets the camera, and that might solve your problem.

no button cell in battery compartment, and checked the manual, nothing about it there unfortunately.
cannot reset camera to default settings either, as can only do this in creative modes ( from which i'm unable to access )

Removing the battery WILL RESET THE CAMERA. Simply remove the battery, turn the power switch to the ON position, and hold the shutter button down for a few seconds. This bleeds all power off the internal circuits. Then turn the power switch to the OFF position and reinstall the battery. Then retest the camera.

By the way the message you are getting in virtually all instances indicates you are doing somthing wrong, not a camera issue. You may wish to carefully review the content at http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/T3I/T3IMENUS.HTM (external link).
