I had to send my 7D in for servicing today. The back control wheel stopped working so I couldn't adjust aperture i manual or adjust exposure control in other shooting modes. The weird thing is the wheel works in menus and allows my to cycle through AF points, but it just doesn't work when trying to adjust aperture in manual or exposure control other shooting modes. Yes, I checked to make sure the lock was off...

My 7D is just out of warranty, and now it's going to cost me $230 to get it fixed, and my camera is gone for 2 or so weeks...

My son turns 6months next week, and I was planning to shoot his 6month shots with my 7D... guess my 40D will have to do...

I guess I could have held on to my 7D, and just used the Q menu button to make the adjustments, but it's too slow and cumbersome...

Bummer, here's hoping maybe they're lenient and don't charge you. I'm sure your 40D will do fine...unless you have an Olympian prodigy for a son, I don't think its AF will have much trouble tracking a 6-month old :D

Did Canon actually give you a 2-week estimate? seems a bit slow.

Canon NJ always did my 1DIII repair work, adjustments and cleaning for free and it was out of warranty. Quite a few people have reported that, lets hope they are nice to you. :)

That's because Canon is a perpetual slave to the 1D3's bad reputation, so they've worked on the cameras for years because of the AF issues. I'm sure they can't wait until that body is out of service life :D

I'm in Hawaii, so any service work requires cameras to be shipped to California to be worked on. I was hoping they would waive the repair fee, but no luck. I dropped my camera off yesterday around 1pm, and the front desk person said their tech was still out to lunch, so she would call me back after he got a chance to take a look at it... I missed her call, and she just left me a voicemail saying it needed to be shipped to california to be worked on, and that it would be $230 to fix since my camera was out of warranty. I have to pay the $230 upfront before they ship it off, so it doesn't look like it will be waived :(

Ya, I'm sure my 40D will do fine, but it's always hard to step back to older equipment once you've become comfortable with something newer. LoL, I tried playing with my Rebel XT a few months ago, and felt totally lost... I kept reaching for the back control wheel to adjust stuff...

I was hoping this would be something easy to fix, because the wheel still worked in menus, and worked when switching autofocus points... Some kind of software glitch or something. I didn't think it would cost $230... Hopefully they update my firmware while their at it to the new 2.0.x firmware they just announced..

Yeah the 1D3 is a very good body, I owned one for a while and liked it, found it a bit heavy but now I wish I had one again (or a 1D4, but whatever!)

I'll probably end up springing for the 7D for my cropper, though, as I get a bit more "reach" with it than the 1D3.

You know you have the option to send it to any American repair facility that you want.
Why let them choose where it goes?

Is that an authorized repair facility that is handling your camera right now or a third party that sends it off if they can not figure it out?

You could always call and complain about the price.

At $230 a pop you are only about 4 times away from buying a used 7D without the issue.

The 7D is a great body and with the upcoming firmware update it will be even nicer. :)

As far as I know, it's a Canon USA office.
