used 1dmk2. Don't know what you shoot but 30d wasn't bad. 40d was better.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either. Probably whichever you find cheaper.

Setting aside the usual crap about magnesium vs polycarbonate and swivel screen hate, the 60D has the advantage in

Newer sensor

Newer processor

Better high ISO

Flash wireless commander for remote triggering of off camera flash (2 groups). It got me into studio portraiture...

Better implementation of video

The 50D has

More FPS

Manual Focus Adjustment (a feature that many say they can't live without, but I've heard only one 60D owner complain that his lens required adjustment (actually having to send back to Canon).

There are probably other smaller or less important features, I am sure others will chime in.

Maris M1,,,Gerry i see you have a 60D,,and i think you are saying the 60D with its newer items would be a better buy for me as i don,t think MFA would be of much help to me as my Macro use is very limited...Ron

I vote for the 60D. No MFA required. I shoot 50mm 1.8 wide open, 85 1.8 wide open and 100-400L wide open at 400 and never missed MFA. I believe Canon improved the AF algorithms with the 60D. I had a 135L and 200L that both back-focused on my T1i. Neither did it on my 60D.

My 50 1.8 will miss focus in low light, but that is not a MFA problem. It is a lens problem.

No. It doesn't need it.

Ron, personally I prefer to buy a newer rather than an older body.

More often than not, newer bodies have better features/capabilities. Some people like them, some don't care about novelties.

However, electronics age, parts become more difficult to come by. The 1DII Bobbyz recommended above is no longer serviced by Canon. I expect that some other coveted models will follow in the next 2 years. If you have limited resources, there is no reason to play with antiques.

The Canon Loyalty Program often has 50D and 60D refurbished bodies available, I think the 60D costs $640 + tax/shipping, the 50D somewhat less (maybe $100 less... I am not sure).

MFA is for any lens, not just macro lenses. It allows you to adjust a lens that front/back focuses. I've read somewhere that in the 60D Canon implements some changes in the software which either reduces or eliminates the front/back focus. I am not sure that this is not an urban myth...

At Canon refurb there is a good chance you will get a camera with a few tens or a few hundred clicks. You do get a camera that had a once over by Canon techs, 14 return period and 90 days warranty.

With a used camera, you get an unknown... Unless you know the seller, you don't know if something is wrong with the camera, normally the actuations will be in the thousands, in general the camera had a prior life.

I KNOW my 60D focuses fast primes (f/1.8, 2.0) wide open at very close distances without missing. There are no consistent errors of any kind. I've never tried any of the f/1.2 or 1.4 lenses. But when my DOF is measured in fractions of an inch, I am pushing the limits of AF technology. The AF system on the 60D just works. Oh, by the way, my T1i did have consistent problems with some of these same lenses, shot wide open.
