Need help soon, wife wants new camera tonight.

Her biggest thing is to capture sharp images. She hates getting blurry images with our old Sony. It's about 7 years old.

I was thinking along the lines of a Canon elph but not sure. Can anyone suggest a great p&s that's compact and will take great pics under $250?

I should mention, were going to best buy to get it, so it has to be one they carry.

For that price range I would get the canon elph 110....

Yea any Elph model will provide great images. Before going to Best Buy check the Best Buy on line site for deals, I found my S100 for $379 on BB site and $429 in store. They matched the on line price in the store.

I dont have any pics transferred yet but I'm pretty impressed so far with it. 1080p hd video is nice bonus too.

Just checked BB.com and the camera we bought yesterday is on sale now. Looks like ill be making a trip back.

The reason why you usually get blurry pics is that the camera chooses to low of a shutter speed.

Avoid Nikon's - they really, really love low shutter speeds.

Canon's are better, but not perfect.

The only way to really avoid blurry pics is to get a camera with manual controls and set the shutter speed yourself (or get a camera where you can set the minimum shutter speed to at least 1/60 - unfortunately I don't know of any non-dslr's that can do that).

The Canon sx230 lets you set the shutter speed manually, and costs around $230. It's a camera with a lot of optical zoom.

The Canon s100 is more expensive - $360 - and it's better for taking pics in low light (though it doesn't zoom as far). Also has full manual controls - it's what I own.

I'm sure you'll say "she doesn't want to have to set anything manually", but unfortunately I don't know of anything to specifically recommend who's auto mode is perfect for non-blurry pics.

I do think that any modern Canon compact will give you a lot less blurry pics than a 5 year old Sony model.

Thanks for the reply Paul. Your exactly right, she wants an automatic transmission not a stick. She really likes this one so far and is much better than our old Sony 12x optical. Your right about the shutter speed on these p&s's. We got it initially for $229 then today it was on sale for $199 so i got some money back.

Glad to hear you got some money back, I was surprised when I got my S100 that the in store price was $50 higher than the on line price. If they hadn't matched the on line price I would have had it shipped to the store for the discount.

Try putting the camera in "sports" mode or "kids & pets". It will select a higher shutter speed at the expense of higher ISO and more noise. It's a poor substitute for manual mode, but it gets the job done. Or use the flash in low light to freeze things, but P&S flashes aren't that great. Cheers.
