Had a 500 gig ATA 3.5" drive that was never used, so I picked up a cheap external enclosure so I could use it as backup/storage for pictures and files. For some reason I cannot get the drive to show up as a drive on the computer. If I go into "devices and printers" I can see the drive listed as a "mass storage device" but it only shows the model of the hard drive. I have used the standard jumper settings as it was shipped with as well as changing the jumpers to "master" as was shown in a search I made.

The external enclosure us USB 2.0 and it is hooked up to my laptop now running Windows 7 professional. The drive does spin up and power is applied.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Last time I made myself an external, it was very, very simple and worked right away.

If it was never used, it wasn't formatted. You need to go into Disk Management and create at least one partition on the drive and format it.

Duh, thank you. I found a path to follow, went in and found it was not formatted to use as a drive. Two minutes later everything is recognized and I now have two backups on external drives and my C drive is nice and empty. Thanks. :)
