I don't care to go above 3200, but I have a few 6400 shots that look very good on the web and 8x10 print

I'll shoot up to iso 12800 if I have to turn. If you get the exposure right there shouldn't much problem with web sizes images after a little NR and even medium sized prints. There are a few threads about how to get the most out of the 7d, a quick search should give you loads of info

ISO 6400 all the time, 12800 when I felt adventurous... I just picked up another 7D recently, which makes my 4th since its introduction. So far it seems to be working well, with lenses front focusing on this like my first one.

400 was it for me. There was far to much noise in the blue channel for my liking. PP latitude of RAW files was unacceptable for me as well.

I loved the interface and speed, though.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but wouldn't max iso be based on the lens speed & availible light. In a given light condition, around 50 feet camera to subject distance, wouldn't a canon 70-200 f2.8 with a flash yield a less grained photo than a canon 70-200 f4. Both wide open

Once you nail your exposure as needed, both aperture and shutter speed, then you change your ISO accordingly. If you shoot HAMSTTR, you do precisely this, except you purposely go up 1 stop ISO and bring it back down during post.

So of course, if you are shooting f2.8 vs f4, with all other things being constant, aperture and shutter, you will have to change your ISO to get the same exposure. The question posted here is a very subject "what is the maximum ISO one should expect to use with great results on the 7D"... of which there is no good answer. You can see some people don't go over ISO 400 and others that figure out how to make the higher ISOs work for their needs. Personally I believe those that don't go past ISO 800 are doing themselves more disservice than good, because there is no reason one cannot get quality large prints at ISO 1600-3200, with little post work. The 7D matches the 5D classic at ISO 3200 (or slightly betters it), so if people use ISO 3200 on the 5D, there is no reason to not use it on the 7D.

I could see where people make ISO 3200 their limit however.

OP asked about web use with NR; for that, ISO6400 easy with good initial exposure. If I might need to print it at some point, I don't like to go over 1600...but I will.

I think he is referring to my high ISO 7D thread where people gave ideas on how they are able to manage the noise on their 7D, both during the shoot with settings, and then afterwards with post processing.

Click on my mini-reviews link in my signature, it should be in that list.

I apply the same techniques to the 1D4 when shooting ISO 51200. :)

Having owned a 7d for a number of years I love this camera. I've had no issues shooting at 6400 ISO and felt the image was 100% usable. I've shot as high as 12,800 and after applying NIK Dfine I was happy with the result as well

I rarely print larger than 8X10, but for web shots and stuff I give to friends and family, I'll shoot ISO6400 all day or should I say all night. Assuming I can ETTR, 7D files are pretty easy to clean up (thanks Team Speed).

I'll use ISO 12,800 when I need it, but it requires a bit more PP work on my part. Topaz DeNoise works wonders, but I still struggle at times balancing cleanliness with a loss of too much detail, my own shortcomings I'm sure. The 7D is great at high ISO.

3200 is my max. But for your use, 6400 is probably a good choice with some post processing.
