Re surface blur / detail masking...sounds a lot like how Topaz Denoise works. OP should check it out, unsure if it will launch from PSE though.

My 7d arrives tomorrow, so I can contibute to the high ISO insanity :)

Have you tried the surface blur action in photoshop? It can help mask out noise in blurred smooth backgrounds.

Thanks for the tip. I have purchased a half-dozen books on PSE, and downloaded a ton of videos from Youtube. I am starting to get better with the software but have a long way to go.

Yes it lauches from PSE, I downloaded the Trial version and it worked well, I've tried several of the de-noising (is that a word?) software and they all have launched so far from PSE 10.

How about zero post processing at ISO 6400, 1/80th, f5? Mediocre window lighting...

Then after a little spit and shine...

Personally I believe those that don't go past ISO 800 are doing themselves more disservice than good, because there is no reason one cannot get quality large prints at ISO 1600-3200, with little post work.

Agree. I can get large quality prints from my old XTi/400D at max ISO. Think shutterspeed instead of ISO.

The 7D matches the 5D classic at ISO 3200 (or slightly betters it), so if people use ISO 3200 on the 5D, there is no reason to not use it on the 7D.

Agree. If the exposure is "correct" they will match. The 5DC however has a very small advantage in terms of latitude in post due to its larger pixels. ( IMO )
