I posted yesterday about a recommendation for a good indoor zoom lens to be used on family portraits and such. He'd prefer not to use flash, but has a 580ex incase he needs it.

He was looking for a mid-level lens, as he was trying not to spend much, but after reading reviews on several recommended lenses from this forum and another, he decided money doesn't matter. I recommended the 24-70mm 2.8L and he would like to get some feedback on the lens, besides from the reviews section.

I don't have one, but would love it. I have a 85 f1.8 and that is a fabulous lens and not too expensive. That 24-70 is my next lens.

Well, if you need a zoom, and you can't use a flash, then I'm afraid 2.8 is as fast as you're gonna get. I use this all the time indoors, and it works like a charm for me. However, when I had my 50 1.4, I found myself switching to that quite a lot just for when the available light just wasn't there. The 24-70L, in my opinion, is about as sharp as it gets when you're talking zooms. I like it even more than my 70-200L IS. You wouldn't be sorry. Quite honestly, it's absolutely the nicest standard zoom I've ever seen/used.

I use this lens 99.99% of the time. For my purposes, there's just about nothing it can't do.

I was using mine today at an office Christmas party in a restaurant. Cranked the ISO up, but I got hand-holdable speeds.

It will do an Ok job but it will need decentish light still or you need to up the ISO. Personally, I'd get a couple of stellar Canon primes 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 and then a Sigma 24-70 2.8. Similar price, much more flexible and the primes will give better IQ while the Sigma will be similar.

Ditto, the 24-70L is my favorite zoom if you can get past the heft.

I personally think my 24-70L on my 20D with grip has a nice, comfortably hefty, balanced feel. It's like having a Rolex on your wrist vs. a Timex.

I used my Tamron 28-75 F2.8, hand held, inside a dimly lit room last weekend at ISO3200, the pics came out pretty good (external link). F2.8 is fine so long as you're not afraid of a bit of noise.

Some primes for indoor

30 1.4 and 50 1.4 if you find the zoom isn't cutting it.
