Nothing works

Hello again. Canon Rebel EOS

At first I was having trouble with my contacts. Cleaned them and everything worked again.

Now I don`t know what else could possibly go wrong. Right after the contacts were acting up my [Issue #1]pop up flash won`t pop up anymore. I have to manually force it up, after turning the camera off and then on again.

Anyone know how to fix this?

About a month ago I was having trouble keeping my camera working. I would turn it on and it would flash an error message telling me to turn my camera off, reinstall the battery, and turn it back on. It would take approx 2 photos then it would tell me the same message. I would have to take the battery out, blow on it, and then re-install it for it to work only a couple more times.

Yesterday, same message, I thought my battery maybe dead so I installed my secondary one that was fully charged. It worked once, the camera shut off and I cannot get it to even turn on now.

Does anyone have an idea as to what I'm supposed to do with this damn camera. I spent way too much money on this to have so many issues...

Bought it 3 years ago and of course the warranty is done. Is it worth spending the money on shipping it back to Canon Repair to get them to fix it? Any experiences with dealing with them on these issues?

Issue 1.) Make sure that the camera is in one of the basic zone modes as flash will not pop up automatically in the creative zone modes.

Issue 2.) What error message did you receive? Could be a card(or lens) problem.

And:

Are you SURE your secondary battery was REALLY fully charged?

Issue #1 when I put it in automatic mode, green box, where the pop up is supposed to, it sounds like it's trying to. But then error 99 comes up. Says that something blocked the pop up, to shut off the camera and turn it back on and try again. But it still doesn't work. It's physically stuck down.

Issue #2.
Just figured out that both my batteries are almost 4 years old. Bought at the same time. They must be completely drained. I use them a lot. I always keep them charged. I'm going to order new batteries and see what happens.

The little micro-switch on the hots-hoe may be broken or jammed. If the pop-up flash thinks a hot-shoe flash has been mounted on the camera it won't pop up. If that's not it then maybe the mechanism/motor for popping up the flash is broken.

Also, if you use a non-Canon plastic hot-shoe cover the micro-switch will be depressed and think a flash is mounted and won't pop up. The Canon one is designed to not interfere with the micro-switch.

It's also possible that your dead batteries don't have enough power to lift the flash...Try new batteries...I hope you get it fixed quickly.

Regarding Issue #1. I don't even know what a hot shoe is. But whatever it is, I don't have one.
It's been acting up for months. Way before the batteries died. If I jam my finger nail under it I can force it up. Then it will work. I think the mechanism is just screwed. When I have it on Av or other settings it makes the loud clicking noise. Like it does when it used to pop up. But then the error message comes on telling me that the pop up has been blocked, clear the obstruction, turn the camera off and try again. There is nothing in the way. So it must be the mechanism.

I've ordered new batteries and they will arrive here in 2 months. I will have withdrawals but it will be worth the wait when I can fire it up again.

The hot sure is the metal area on the very top of the camera where an external flash mounts. On a 60D there is a very tiny microswitch along the right hand side of the hot sure, looking at the camera back. It is about midway along the right hand rail. Make sure that switch is free to operate. Use a knife or toothpick to operate the switch.

Truthfully it sound as if the batteries are marginal. Why do you have to wait two months?

You might also check the date/time battery (see manual) if the camera has one. It doesn't seem like this is your issue but it will be dead in another year anyway.

The hot shoe is the very top of the camera(highest point)...Be sure to check what John says(he gives good advice) when you get your new batteries...2 months?...Agony!!
